Kentucky Behind-the-Wheel Training: Is Professional Instruction Required or Optional Under KY Law? (2026)

Kentucky does not require first-time drivers to buy professional behind-the-wheel lessons. For drivers who entered the permit stage under 18, the state requires 60 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. The separate 4-hour Graduated Licensing Program course is education, not an in-car lesson, and is required before the unrestricted-license stage.

Kentucky Driving Training Requirements by Age

• Professional In-Car Lessons: Optional for every age group. Kentucky does not require a set number of paid lessons.
• Under-18 Supervised Practice: 60 hours, including 10 at night, documented on the official Practice Driving Log.
• 4-Hour GLP Course: Required for drivers whose permit was issued under age 18 before they receive a full unrestricted license. It is completed after the road test/intermediate-license step. RightLane's online option is $12.50; Kentucky also lists free approved options.
• First Permit at 18+: No state 60-hour practice log and no under-18 GLP course requirement. The permit still must be held for the age-specific waiting period before the road test.

Planning Professional Driving Lessons in Kentucky

Kentucky does not set a required number of professional driving-school lessons. Use paid instruction only if it helps with skills, confidence, or test preparation. Package prices and lesson costs vary by school, so use the dedicated behind-the-wheel training cost page for price comparisons.

Can my parent teach all 60 required Kentucky practice hours?

Yes. Kentucky does not require paid professional lessons. For an under-18 applicant, the required 60 supervised hours can be completed through qualifying supervised practice and recorded on the official Practice Driving Log.

Do professional driving-school hours count toward the 60-hour log?

Paid lessons do not replace the Practice Driving Log. If supervised driving time from lessons is being counted toward the under-18 total, make sure it is properly recorded with the rest of the required practice.

Is professional behind-the-wheel training required for adults in Kentucky?

No. Kentucky lists professional driver-training schools as optional. Adults still must meet their permit waiting period and pass the KSP road test.

Value of Professional Behind-the-Wheel Training in Kentucky

• Test Readiness: Instructors know the exact KSP test routes and scoring criteria. They correct 'autofail' habits like rolling stops or incorrect mirror checks that parents may overlook.
• Insurance: Completing a course with a KSP-approved school may qualify you for an insurance discount (up to 10%).
• ☐ Parent-Taught vs. Professional: A hybrid approach works best - complete the mandatory log with a parent, then take 2-3 professional lessons focused on test skills.

Do You Need a Driving-School Certificate for the Kentucky Road Test?

No professional driving-school certificate is required for the Kentucky road test. Drivers in the under-18 GDL path must bring the completed Practice Driving Log. The 4-hour GLP course is required before the full unrestricted license, not as a prerequisite for taking the road test.

Is a KSP-approved driving school automatically a KYTC-approved GLP provider?

No. KSP approval of a driving school does not automatically mean the school offers a KYTC-approved Graduated Licensing Program course. Check the state directory for the GLP approval field.

Avoiding Common Kentucky Driving School and Practice Log Mistakes

Keep professional instruction separate from Kentucky's state requirements. Paid lessons can support practice, but they do not replace the under-18 Practice Driving Log or change the permit waiting period. Use the dedicated practice-hours page for logging rules and the road-test pages for test-day paperwork and vehicle requirements.

Do I need to finish Kentucky's four-hour GLP course before my road test?

No. For the under-18 GDL path, the road test comes before the required GLP course. The course must be completed before moving from the intermediate license to the full unrestricted license.
