Kentucky Failed Permit Test: Retake Timing and What to Do Next (2026)
Failing the Kentucky learner's permit knowledge test means you see a failed result immediately. You can schedule another Kentucky State Police testing appointment and retake the written test on the next available testing day. Use your score report to focus on the topics you missed before trying again.
Kentucky Permit Test Retake Timing After a Failure
You cannot retake the ordinary Kentucky Class D written permit test on the same day. Kentucky's current GDL guidance says you may return on the next available testing day.

How soon can I retake the Kentucky permit test after failing?
You can retake it on the next available testing day. The old six-failure, three-day rule is not the standard Class D permit-test rule.
Do I need a new KSP appointment after failing the permit test?
Yes. Schedule another KSP driver-testing appointment for the retake. Appointment availability can affect the actual date even though the retake is allowed on the next available testing day.
Do I have to pay again to retake the Kentucky written permit test?
No separate ordinary Class D written-test retest fee is listed. For fee and refund details, see the Kentucky fees and costs guide.
Can I retake the Kentucky permit test at a different KSP location?
Yes. KSP allows driver-testing appointments at available testing locations regardless of your county of residence. Check the current KSP appointment system for openings.
Study the Kentucky Driver Manual before your retake and use your score report to review weak topics.
What to Do After Failing the Kentucky Permit Test
Start with the questions or topics you missed. Review the matching Driver Manual sections, then use focused practice questions instead of repeatedly memorizing the same test.
Does failing the written test delay my 180-day or 30-day permit waiting period?
Yes, indirectly. The permit holding period begins after the learner's permit is actually issued. If you have not passed the written test yet, the permit has not been issued, so the 180-day or 30-day period has not started.
If KSP asks you to bring updated application documents to a later appointment, use the current document requirements. School Compliance forms, when required, come from the student's school or local school district rather than from a general permit-test download.
Kentucky Permit Test Attempt Limits After Repeated Failures
Kentucky's current standard Class D guidance does not state a maximum number of written-test attempts. After a failed attempt, schedule another KSP appointment; the standard Class D guidance allows a retake on the next available testing day.
How many times can I take the Kentucky permit test? No published maximum is stated for the standard Class D written test.
How many times can I fail the Kentucky permit test? No separate failure cap is stated.
What happens if I fail the Kentucky permit test 2 times? No special two-failure penalty is stated.
What happens if I fail the Kentucky permit test 3 times? No special three-failure waiting period is stated.
Is there a maximum number of failed attempts? No maximum is stated in the current standard Class D guidance; CDL attempt rules do not apply to the ordinary Kentucky learner's permit test.
Review the Driver Manual sections connected to the questions you missed.
Use targeted practice questions for weak areas such as right-of-way or road signs.
If reading the test is difficult, ask KSP about audio or oral testing options and review the disability accommodations guidance.
Do not treat third-party practice-test wording as the actual KSP question bank.
A good goal is to answer practice questions consistently before booking another attempt, but Kentucky's legal passing standard is the official test score, not a third-party readiness percentage.
Kentucky does not publish a separate appeal process for an ordinary failed permit test. If you believe a technical problem affected the test, such as a frozen screen, report it to the proctor immediately so the issue can be handled at the testing location.
For a normal failed result, the practical next step is to review the missed material, schedule another KSP appointment, and retake the written test on the next available testing day.
