Kansas Instruction Permit Application: Where to Apply, Required Documents and Rejection Steps

You apply for a Kansas instruction permit by visiting a Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) Division of Vehicles office.

How Do You Apply for a Kansas Instruction Permit at KDOR?

You apply for a Kansas instruction permit at a Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) driver licensing location. Applicants must be at least 14, bring the required identity and residency documents, provide Social Security proof when required, pass the vision screening, and satisfy the written-test requirement. Lawful temporary residents in non-work status may qualify without an SSN.

Kansas Instruction Permit Application Steps

1. Bring the required documents: Use the Required Documents guide for the full identity, residency, and Social Security checklist. If you are under 16, a parent or guardian must be present with photo ID.
2. Plan your office visit: Appointment and walk-in rules vary by location. See the appointment guide before you go.
3. Complete the testing requirement: Prepare for the Kansas knowledge exam and use the permit-test guide for format and testing options.
4. Finish the office process: Submit your documents, complete the vision screening, pay the applicable fees, and finish any required testing.
5. Receive your credential: If approved, you leave with a temporary credential while the permanent card is mailed.

What happens if the office closes before your permit application is finished? Do not assume the unfinished visit carries over automatically. Keep any paperwork the examiner gives you and ask what must be repeated or brought back before you leave.

Apply at any KDOR Driver License Exam Station or participating County Treasurer office offering full driver's license services. Use the KDOR Station Locator and filter for 'Driver License' services.

Handling Application Issues and Rejections

If a core identity or residency document is rejected, you generally need to provide an acceptable replacement before the application can continue. If that cannot be fixed during the visit, another trip may be required. See the appointment guide for rebooking and walk-in details.

Can You Return the Same Day if a Document Is Rejected?

A rejected document does not create a separate new permit application. If you can provide an acceptable replacement while the office can still serve you, the transaction may continue; otherwise, you will need to return with the correct document.

Do you have to restart a Kansas permit application after being sent home for missing documents? Usually, the problem is the missing proof, not the entire application. Bring the acceptable document requested by the examiner and continue the process; a new visit may be needed if the first visit ended.

Permit Fees, Retest Costs, and Temporary Credential

The regular instruction permit costs $10: a $2 permit fee plus an $8 photo fee. If the initial knowledge exam is taken at the office, add the $3 examination fee. A re-exam is $1.50.

For the complete fee breakdown, see Kansas permit fees. For failed-test timing and attempt rules, use the failed and retakes guide.

If the application is approved, the office issues a temporary credential first and the permanent card is mailed.

How to Avoid Common Application Delays

The most common preventable delay is arriving without an acceptable identity or residency document. Check the official station location and your document list before leaving home. The detailed appointment, testing, fee, and retake rules are covered in their dedicated guides.

Can You Finish a Permit Application at a Different Kansas Driver License Office?

Kansas offers permit services through multiple driver licensing locations, but service levels vary and a partially completed transaction may need follow-up at the office that started it. Call the new location before switching offices so you do not make an unnecessary trip.
