Does an Iowa Instruction Permit Cost More at a County Treasurer Office?

Is the $6 Iowa Permit Fee Charged Every Year?

No. The $6 state fee is for the four-year Class C instruction permit; it is not a $6 annual charge.

Do You Pay Extra for the Temporary Paper Permit and Mailed Card?

What Does the Knowledge Test Cost in Iowa?

Iowa DOT does not list a separate standard fee for each noncommercial knowledge-test attempt. The $6 charge is the instruction-permit issuance fee, not a per-attempt knowledge-test fee. Failure, retesting, and refund questions are covered in the dedicated test-fee and retake guidance; failing the knowledge test does not by itself create another $6 state test charge.

The $6 permit fee is only one part of the possible cost.

• Credit-card processing: Iowa DOT currently lists a $1.50 processing fee when a credit card is used.
• County convenience fees: County locations may charge an additional convenience fee; check the specific office before visiting.
• Driver education: This is a separate cost for many teen applicants. See the dedicated Iowa behind-the-wheel training cost guide for provider and program pricing.
• Notary or document costs: These can apply in specific situations, such as when a required consent form must be notarized.
