An Illinois Instruction Permit allows you to practice driving only under the permit's supervision and other restrictions.
Supervision:
A qualified supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat whenever you drive on an Illinois instruction permit. The qualifying rules are different for drivers under 18 and drivers age 18 or older, and the supervisor does not need an Illinois-issued license simply because the permit was issued in Illinois.
See the dedicated Illinois permit supervisor requirements for the age, license-class, experience, and minor-supervision rules.
You cannot drive alone on an Illinois instruction permit. Driving without the required qualified supervisor violates the permit restrictions and can lead to a citation and Secretary of State consequences.
For the detailed penalties and licensing consequences, see the Illinois permit driving-alone rules.
Teen practice hours: Drivers under 18 have a separate 50-hour supervised-practice requirement. See the Illinois practice-hours guide for the full rule and log requirements.
You may practice on public roads, including highways, when the required qualified supervisor is in the front passenger seat and you follow the restrictions that apply to your age.
| Rule | Under 18 | Age 18+ |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified supervisor | Required; the minor-supervision rules apply | Required; the adult permit supervision rule applies |
| 50 supervised hours | Required under teen GDL | Not part of the teen 50-hour requirement |
| 9-month permit period | Required before licensing under teen GDL | The teen 9-month rule does not automatically apply |
| Teen curfew/passenger rules | Apply as provided by Illinois GDL law | Do not automatically carry over as teen GDL restrictions |
For drivers under 18, the normal nighttime limits are 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM Friday and Saturday.
| Days | Normal Restricted Hours |
|---|---|
| Sunday-Thursday | 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM |
| Friday-Saturday | 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM |
Illinois law provides limited nighttime exceptions, including when the minor is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other person having custody or control, and for certain work, school, religious, emergency, and other situations. The instruction permit still requires the appropriate qualified supervisor.
For teen permit holders, the qualified supervisor occupies the front passenger seat. Passenger limits and cellphone restrictions must be followed along with the supervision rule.
The teen GDL passenger limits should not automatically be applied to an adult permit holder simply because the person is still practicing on an instruction permit. An adult permit holder must still have the required qualified supervisor in the front passenger seat and follow the traffic and restraint laws that apply.
Traffic violations: A moving-violation conviction can affect a teen permit holder's licensing timeline. See the Illinois tickets and suspensions guide for the detailed consequences.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
