To take the Class D skills test in Idaho, you must provide a street-legal vehicle that is currently registered and has all required safety features.
Your car must pass a pre-drive inspection. If it fails, your test will be canceled and you will forfeit your fees.
The examiner checks whether the vehicle is safe and legal to operate. Required items include working brakes, seat belts, lights/signals, horn, wipers/defroster when needed, adequate tires and safe visibility.
Dashboard lights: Idaho's rule is about critical warning lights or gauges. Do not state that every illuminated dashboard indicator automatically cancels the test.
Registration and insurance: the vehicle must have valid insurance and valid registration.
The registration must be valid, in the vehicle, signed by the registrant and not a photocopy.
You may use a parent's or another person's vehicle if it meets the safety, insurance and registration requirements. If you do not own the vehicle, the owner must give permission as required by the current skills-test rules.
Detailed owner-permission and document rules belong in the Road Test Documents guide.
The vehicle must provide the mirror setup Idaho requires for safe visibility.
The examiner also asks the applicant to locate or demonstrate certain vehicle controls. That knowledge check is separate from the basic roadworthiness inspection; Idaho allows three or fewer missed knowledge/demonstration items before the test is stopped for that portion, subject to required safety equipment.
No. Idaho requires a usable rear-view mirror, or both the left and right side mirrors. All three are not mandatory in every case.
The examiner may refuse a vehicle that is unsafe or does not meet Idaho test requirements. Rental cars have additional eligibility restrictions explained below.
Driver-assist features do not replace the applicant's responsibility to demonstrate manual observation and control during the skills test.
Only in limited circumstances. Idaho says a rental vehicle cannot be used when the applicant is not already a licensed driver or is under age 25.
Common problems lead to immediate cancellation.
Complete Idaho permit details are on the Idaho permit guide.
An expired registration can stop the test because current valid registration is required. Check the registration before test day rather than waiting for the examiner to find the problem.
A critical warning light or gauge can make the vehicle unacceptable for the skills test. Do not describe every check-engine or dashboard light as an automatic failure without considering whether it is a critical safety condition.
Not every illuminated indicator automatically cancels the test. Idaho focuses on critical warning lights or gauges that indicate an unsafe vehicle condition.
A broken mirror can prevent testing if the vehicle no longer meets Idaho's mirror requirement. Remember: the rule is a rear-view mirror or both side mirrors, not necessarily all three.
The Class D skills-test fee is $35 total. Keep detailed payment rules in the Fees & Costs guide.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
