Idaho Behind-the-Wheel Training: Required Hours and Parent-Student Option

Do I need behind-the-wheel training in Idaho?

Yes for the under-17 driver-education path; professional behind-the-wheel training is not mandatory at age 17+.

Idaho Driver Education Requirements by Age

Applicants under 17 need approved Idaho driver education, including the required instructor behind-the-wheel component. At age 17 or older, driver education is not mandatory, although professional driving lessons remain optional. For the full age-based driver-education rules, use the dedicated Driver Ed Requirement guide.

How many driving lessons do I need in Idaho?

For the traditional under-17 program, the required instructor-driving component is 6 behind-the-wheel hours.

For detailed supervised-practice requirements after driver education, see the Idaho driving-rules guide.

Do the 6 instructor driving hours count toward Idaho's 50 supervised hours?

No. The six instructor driving hours are part of the formal driver-education course. The later 50 supervised hours belong to the separate under-17 SIP/GDL practice period.

Is behind-the-wheel training worth it if not required?

For applicants age 17+, formal driver education is optional. Extra professional lessons can still help with vehicle control, traffic judgment and preparation for the skills test, but they do not change Idaho's scoring standard.

Can a 17-year-old take private driving lessons without enrolling in full driver's ed?

Yes. At age 17+, Idaho does not require the under-17 driver-education course, so an applicant may take optional private driving lessons without enrolling in the full required teen program.

Driver Education Completion vs. Road-Test Readiness

No. Completing an approved driver-education program establishes the required training step for the under-17 pathway, but the skills test is scored separately. A completion certificate does not guarantee a passing road-test result.

Traditional Driver Education Completion Requirements

Use an Idaho-approved driver-education program for the under-17 requirement. Current Idaho Department of Education program guidance says the in-car instructor issues a Certificate of Completion after successful completion; the process should not be described as electronic-only.

Parent-Student vs. Traditional Driver Education

Idaho also has an eligible parent-student on-road training pathway for qualifying situations. It uses an approved online driver-training course plus the required parent-student program steps. Idaho lists multiple approved online courses; the route is not limited to IDLA.

The parent-student materials describe 92 total program/supervised hours, not 92 hours of behind-the-wheel driving.

Can an Idaho parent teach the driver-training driving portion?

Only through Idaho's eligible parent-student on-road training pathway and its required conditions. The family must use an approved online driver-training course and follow the state parent-student program requirements.

Common Training Requirement Confusions

Misunderstandings about Idaho's rules are frequent.

• Confusion 1: Parents in Pocatello thought the 50 practice hours could start as soon as their teen got a permit. However, the 50-hour log can only begin after the 6 hours of professional training are complete and the SIP is issued, causing a timeline setback.
• Confusion 2: A 17-year-old in Twin Falls paid for a full driver's ed course, not knowing state law exempts them from the requirement. They could have saved money by studying independently and taking only a few optional lessons.
• ? Confusion 3: A family assumed the 6 observation hours were optional. The DMV in Lewiston rejected their teen's permit upgrade because the driving school's records showed only 4 observation hours completed, requiring two more sessions before proceeding.
