Idaho licensing costs depend on age and path. Fixed state fees are different from variable costs such as driver education, extra lessons, transportation, vehicle repairs, or private-provider charges.
A teen under 17 has required driver-education costs in addition to state fees. A 17- or 18-to-20-year-old using the Class D path can have about $90 in fixed state fees if every test is passed on the first attempt; a 21+ applicant using a four-year license has about $95 in fixed state fees.
Separate Idaho's fixed government fees from provider-dependent costs.
| Path | Fixed state fees if tests are passed first try | Variable costs |
|---|---|---|
| Under 17 GDL | $85: $21.50 Driver Training Permit + $5 knowledge test + up to $28.50 remaining skills-examiner portion + $30 license | Required driver education, optional extra lessons, transportation, vehicle costs, private-provider charges |
| Age 17 | About $90: $20 Class D IP + $5 knowledge test + $35 skills test + $30 license | Optional lessons and other private costs |
| Age 18–20 | About $90: $20 Class D IP + $5 knowledge test + $35 skills test + $30 license | Optional lessons and other private costs |
| Age 21+ using a four-year license | About $95: $20 Class D IP + $5 knowledge test + $35 skills test + $35 license | Optional lessons and other private costs |
If every test is passed on the first attempt, the fixed Idaho fees shown here total about $85 before driver-education tuition: $21.50 for the Driver Training Permit, $5 for the knowledge test, up to $28.50 remaining for the skills examiner, and $30 for the license.
For ages 17–20, the fixed state-fee path is about $90 if each test is passed on the first attempt: $20 instruction permit, $5 knowledge test, $35 skills test, and $30 license. Optional lessons or other private costs are extra.
Permit, knowledge-test, skills-test, duplicate, and license fees are state-set amounts. Driver education, optional lessons, transportation, vehicle rental, and private-provider charges can vary.
For an under-17 applicant, the $21.50 Driver Training Permit already includes the $6.50 county skills-test receipt, so only the remaining examiner portion is added later. Driver-education tuition is variable because Idaho does not set one statewide school price.
Idaho's mandatory driver-education requirement changes at age 17, not only at 18. Waiting until 17 can remove the under-17 driver-education requirement, but it also delays when the applicant can begin the Class D permit path.
For applicants under 17, the fixed non-driver-education state fees are about $85 if each test is passed on the first attempt. Driver education is added separately at the actual provider price. For ages 17–20, the fixed state-fee path is about $90; for a 21+ four-year license path, it is about $95.
It can remove the under-17 driver-education requirement, which may lower the variable cost, but it delays when the applicant starts the Class D permit path. The fixed state-fee total also changes by age and license term.
Failed tests increase the total licensing cost through additional retest fees.
A new knowledge-test attempt adds $5. A new Class D skills-test attempt uses the full $35 test fee.
Example: One failed knowledge test and two failed skills tests add $5 + ($35 × 2) = $75 in retest fees, before any optional extra lessons or private-provider charges.
Some expenses are not fixed Idaho licensing fees.
*Note: Fees are subject to change by the Idaho Legislature. Always verify the latest costs at your local county DMV office.
GDL note: For a licensed driver under 17, the first six months of licensure limit passengers under 17 to one unless the passengers are family members. A driver under 16 is limited to daylight driving (5 AM–10 PM) unless accompanied in the front seat by a licensed driver age 21 or older.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."
