Supervising Driver Requirements
Who Can Supervise an Idaho Learner's Permit Holder? SIP vs. Class D Rules
Your supervisor's qualifications depend on your permit type. The key requirements are the supervisor's age, valid license, and seating position.
Who can supervise me when I drive with a learner's permit in Idaho?
Your supervisor's qualifications depend on your age and permit type. The key requirements are their age, license status, and seating position.
Supervisor Age and License Requirements
Idaho has two main permit types with different rules for qualified supervising drivers.
- Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP): Your supervisor must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver's license.
- Class D Instruction Permit (IP): Your supervisor must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver's license.
In both cases, the supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat. A supervisor with an out-of-state license is acceptable if it is valid and unexpired.
All Idaho permit requirements are covered in the Idaho permit guide.
Parents, Siblings and Other Qualified Supervisors
Use this table to check if your passenger meets the instruction permit supervisor requirements.
| Supervisor Type | For SIP (Under 17) | For Class D Permit (17+) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parent / Guardian | ? Yes (if 21+) | ? Yes (if 18+) | For applicants under 18, liability signing is a separate application requirement. |
| Designated Adult (Aunt, Uncle, Family Friend) | ? Yes (if 21+) | ? Yes (if 18+) | Any adult meeting age/license rules qualifies. |
| Older Sibling | ? Yes (Only if 21+) | ? Yes (If 18+) | A 21-year-old sibling can supervise. A 19-year-old sibling cannot supervise a SIP holder. |
| Certified Driving Instructor | ? Yes | ? Yes | The six instructor behind-the-wheel hours in driver education are separate from the later 50-hour SIP/GDL supervised-driving requirement. |
Does my Idaho permit supervisor have to be my parent?
No. A parent, sibling, relative, family friend, or other adult can supervise if they meet the age, license, and seating requirements for your permit type.
Can someone with an out-of-state driver's license supervise me in Idaho?
Yes, if the license is valid and unexpired and the person meets the age requirement for your permit type.
Can a 20-year-old supervise someone with an Idaho Class D Instruction Permit?
Yes. A regular Class D Instruction Permit requires a licensed supervisor age 18 or older. A 20-year-old cannot supervise an SIP holder because the SIP supervisor must be at least 21.
Does my supervisor have to sit in the front passenger seat?
Yes. The qualified supervisor must occupy the seat beside the learner driver.
Can different qualified adults supervise my Idaho practice driving?
Yes. You are not limited to one supervisor. Each person supervising must qualify for your permit type. If you are completing the SIP/GDL 50-hour requirement, keep the required practice record; see the Required Practice Hours guidance for logging details.
Supervisor vs. Liability Signer
These are different roles. The supervisor is the qualified licensed adult sitting beside the learner while driving. The liability signer is part of the application process for a person under 18 and is normally a birth parent or legal guardian. If the signer cannot appear, Idaho allows an acceptable power of attorney. The person supervising the drive does not have to be the liability signer.
What an Idaho Permit Supervisor Must Do
The supervisor's legal responsibilities are serious. They must be capable of exercising control and assisting the learner driver.
- Sobriety: There is no 'legal limit' for alcohol for a supervisor. Supervisors must never be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while instructing. An impaired supervisor is unqualified and violates the law.
- Focus: The supervisor's job is to scan for hazards. They should not use a phone or be otherwise distracted.
- Consequences: Driving with an unqualified supervisor voids your insurance and can result in a citation. For an SIP holder, violating the supervision requirement can also cancel the SIP and require a new six-month supervised period. Do not apply that GDL restart rule automatically to a regular Class D Instruction Permit.
Common Supervisor Eligibility Mistakes
These real examples show common mistakes about who can supervise a learner driver.
- Boise: A 16-year-old with an SIP was driving with a 20-year-old cousin beside them. The cousin was too young to qualify as the SIP supervisor. An SIP supervision violation can cancel the SIP and require a new six-month supervised period.
- Idaho Falls: A supervisor had a valid Colorado license but was cited because they had consumed two beers before the practice session. The officer determined they were not capable of exercising proper control, a violation of supervisor responsibilities.
- Meridian: A parent thought only they could supervise their 17-year-old. The rule for a 17-year-old with a Class D Instruction Permit allows any qualified licensed adult age 18+ to supervise, including an older sibling or family friend.
Before Each Supervised Drive
- Check the supervisor's license: It should be valid and unexpired, and the supervisor must meet the age rule for your permit type.
- Use the correct seat: The supervisor must sit beside the learner.
- If you have an SIP: Keep your required supervised-practice record current. Detailed logging rules belong on the Required Practice Hours page.
- Do not confuse supervision with application consent: Applicants under 18 have a separate liability-signer requirement. If the signer cannot attend, an acceptable power of attorney may be used. See the eligibility and documents section for application paperwork.
