You can take the Hawaii knowledge test online from home or at a Driver Licensing Center on a computer. Both options use computer-based testing.
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Online at home | Eligible applicants can use KnowToDrive with the required device and proctoring setup. |
| In-person licensing center | Take the Class 3 knowledge test at a location that offers driver-license written testing. |
| Satellite/registration-only location | Do not assume every county service location offers driver-license written testing. Verify the service before traveling. |
Eligible applicants can use KnowToDrive to take the Class 3 knowledge test remotely on a compatible computer. This page treats KnowToDrive as a testing-location option; registration, device setup, responsible-adult rules and post-pass issuance steps belong in the dedicated Online Services guide.
KnowToDrive describes the Hawaii exam as available to Hawaii residents "wherever, whenever" on a compatible computer. You still must register with the correct county and meet Hawaii's eligibility and identity requirements; remote access does not turn the test into an out-of-state permit application.
Hawaii uses computer-based testing for both online and in-person exams. Paper tests require special accommodation requests.
Use the official county service directory to confirm that the location offers driver-license written testing before you travel.
| Island/County | Examples of testing locations |
|---|---|
| Oahu (Honolulu) | Kapalama, Kapolei, Koolau, Wahiawa and Waianae driver licensing centers. |
| Maui County | Use Maui County's current driver-licensing location list and confirm written-test service. |
| Hawaii County | Hilo and Kona driver-licensing locations. |
| Kauai County | Lihue for driver-license and permit testing. Kapa'a Satellite should not be listed as a permit-test location. |
Appointment systems and slot-finding tactics belong in the Appointments & SOS guide.
Do not assume a test registered under one county will be accepted by another. Hawaii County specifically warns online applicants to select Hawaii County and says a certificate taken under the wrong county cannot be accepted. For in-person testing or another county, confirm that county's rule before traveling.
Not always. The important distinction is the county process, not necessarily the exact desk where you tested. For example, Maui tells online passers to submit their certificate and application to their nearest County of Maui Driver Licensing Office. Follow the post-pass instructions for your county.
Applicants often visit the wrong office or misunderstand services. A parent drove their teen to Kapolei Satellite City Hall for testing, only to discover they needed the Kapolei Driver Licensing Center a mile away.
County differences can include appointment systems, testing hours, online-test fees, permit issuance fees and the deadline for finishing issuance after an online pass.
Do not treat a $10 permit fee or a 60-day post-pass deadline as statewide. Use the county-specific fee and online-service guides for those details.
No statewide rule says every licensing center must accept every county's online certificate. Follow the county named in your registration and completion instructions. Hawaii County, for example, says a certificate taken under the wrong county cannot be accepted.
Bring the identity, residency and other documents required for the credential you are applying for. Use the dedicated Required Documents page for the full checklist.
The main form is the State of Hawaii Driver's License Application. Do not label CS-L(DL)239 as the main application; that form is used for parental consent where applicable.
Detailed appointment tactics and document-rejection scenarios belong in the Appointments & SOS and Required Documents pages.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
