Written tests are administered before the office cutoff; check the current office schedule.

This page covers instruction permit and written-test appointments. Road-test appointments use separate scheduling rules.

Booking Hawaii Permit Tests: AlohaQ and County Portal Guide

Each county operates its own scheduling system. Use the county where you will complete the permit transaction.

Oahu: Use AlohaQ for Driver Licensing Center appointments.
Maui: Book through the Maui County appointment system.
Hawaii County: Use the VRL appointment system.
Kauai: Use the Kauai DMV scheduler.

Written-test days and cutoff times are location-specific. Check the dedicated DFA Hours & Best Times guide before choosing a late-day slot.

Do I Need a Hawaii DFA Appointment After Passing the Permit Test Online?

Yes. Passing KnowToDrive does not issue the instruction permit by itself. You still need the county's in-person permit step to present the required originals, complete screening and photo steps, and finish issuance. Book the permit or written-test/instruction-permit service required by your county.

Missing Hawaii DFA Appointment Confirmations

Check your email and spam folder, then verify the booking in the same county scheduler you used. If you cannot confirm the appointment, contact the county licensing office before traveling. Keep the confirmation number, email, or screenshot once the booking is verified.

What Happens If You Miss or Cancel a Hawaii DFA Permit Appointment?

Missing your appointment forfeits your slot completely. You must rebook immediately using the same online system.

Rescheduling a Hawaii DFA Permit Appointment

Never cancel your current appointment until you have a new one confirmed. Counties handle rescheduling differently:

Oahu: Use 'Manage Appointment' on AlohaQ. Must reschedule by 6:00 AM on the appointment day.
Maui & Hawaii County: Use the link in your confirmation email or the online scheduler.
Kauai: Use the online scheduler to change your date.

Cancelling Your Appointment:
- Oahu: Cancel via AlohaQ. For road tests, cancel by 6:00 AM or face a 14-day lockout and loss of deposit.
- Maui: Cancel at least 24 hours in advance. Road test no-shows incur a $20 fee.
- Hawaii County: Cancel via the VRL system or call the specific office.
- Always keep your cancellation confirmation email as proof.

Can you change the location without starting over? If the scheduler offers a reschedule option, use it. If it requires a new booking, confirm the new location and service before giving up the existing slot. County portals handle this differently, so do not assume a booking automatically transfers to another office.

How Can You Find a Hawaii Permit Appointment When No Slots Are Available?

If your preferred appointment is unavailable, check the county booking portal again for cancellations and compare other licensing locations that offer the same service.

Refresh for cancellations: Openings can appear when another applicant cancels.
Try another eligible location: On Oahu, compare full-service Driver Licensing Centers rather than waiting only for one office.
Use walk-in service only when the county allows it: Walk-ins are not guaranteed and appointment holders may rece
