Does a DUI on a Georgia permit delay eligibility for a Class D license?

Yes, a qualifying DUI conviction can affect the clean-record requirement for a teen moving from Class CP to Class D. The driver must also complete any DDS suspension and reinstatement requirements before progressing.

Long-Term Impact on License and Record

The consequences extend far beyond the suspension period, affecting insurance, employment, and future opportunities.

Insurance: A DUI can materially affect eligibility and premiums. Detailed rate and policy effects belong in the Insurance Cost Impact page.
Employment & Scholarships: A DUI conviction is permanent on your Georgia criminal record and appears on background checks for 10+ years, potentially disqualifying you from jobs, college scholarships, or military service.
Reinstatement Process: After the suspension, you must:
1. Serve the full suspension period.
2. Complete the DUI Risk Reduction Program.
3. Pay a $210 reinstatement fee (in person) or $200 (online/mail).

Example: A teen in Augusta had their permit revoked for a DUI. After their 12-month suspension, they paid the $210 fee at the DDS office on Dean's Bridge Road but were rejected because their Risk Reduction completion form wasn't in the state database yet. They had to wait three more weeks and make a second trip.

Straight From the DDS office: Before visiting a DDS Customer Service Center (like the one in Macon on Northside Drive), use the online license status check on the official DDS website to confirm all required items are processed. This prevents wasted trips and rescheduling. Georgia zero-tolerance rules for permit holders are covered on the Georgia learner's permit guide.

What happens when your Georgia permit supervisor gets pulled over?

If your supervising driver gets pulled over in Georgia while you're behind the wheel with a Class CP permit, the legal consequences can be severe for both of you.

The most critical rule is that under O.C.G.A. section 40-5-24, your supervisor must be 'fit and capable of exercising control' over the vehicle.
If they are intoxicated, asleep, or legally disqualified, the Class CP supervision condition is no longer met. The learner must stop driving until a qualified supervisor is available.

How Supervisor Status Affects a Georgia Permit Holder During a Stop

The key question is whether the person beside the learner actually meets the Class CP supervision rule. Forgetting the physical license card is not the same as being unlicensed, suspended, or unfit to supervise.
