To get a Georgia Class CP learner's permit, you must pass a vision screening.
| Requirement | Standard | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Acuity | 20/60 in at least one eye | Minimum 20/60 acuity in at least one eye, corrected or uncorrected. You may use corrective lenses during the test. |
| Field of Vision | 140 degrees horizontally | Measured with both eyes open - the standard used on DDS Form DDS-MR-274. |
| Monocular Vision | 70 degrees temporally / 50 degrees nasally in the functional eye | If only one eye has usable vision, the horizontal field must be at least 70 degrees temporally and 50 degrees nasally. |
The eye exam for instruction permit happens at a DDS Customer Service Center.
| Vision result | What happens next |
|---|---|
| Pass without corrective lenses | Continue with the permit process without a corrective-lenses restriction. |
| Pass while wearing glasses or contacts | You can continue, and DDS may place Restriction B requiring corrective lenses while driving. |
| Do not meet the screening standard | DDS may require a completed Vision Report (DDS-MR-274) before you can continue. |
If you fail the vision screening, you cannot take the knowledge test that day.
Example 1: A student in Atlanta went to tone Savannah applicant found out that detail matters: reading glasses were brought instead of distance glasses, and the eye chart was failed on the first attempt. The applicant returned the same afternoon with the correct pair and passed. Georgia DDS allows a same-day retest once the correct eyewear is retrieved.
Example 2: An applicant in Macon brought Form DDS 274 pre-completed by their ophthalmologist confirming a 140-degree peripheral field. DDS accepted the form and allowed the applicant to proceed directly to the knowledge test without a machine screening.ed it.
Full Georgia permit rules are at the Georgia learner's permit guide.
Example 3: A teen in Columbus forgot his contact lenses. He could not read the 20/60 line on the machine. He put his contacts in and passed, but his permit was issued with the corrective lens restriction.
The current DDS-MR-274 form does not state a fixed public expiration period. Use a current eye examination and submit the completed report promptly. If an older report is questioned, DDS may require updated vision information before completing the transaction.
What happens if you pass visual acuity but fail the peripheral-vision requirement? You still do not meet Georgia's standard vision screening. A regular noncommercial driver must meet both the acuity standard and the required horizontal field of vision, so DDS may require a completed vision report before deciding eligibility or restrictions.
Do you need another DDS vision screening after medical review clears you? Not in every medical-review case. DDS evaluates the report and decides what is needed next. If you are trying to remove an existing corrective-lenses restriction, however, you must visit a Customer Service Center and pass the DDS vision exam.
Yes. Wearing glasses or contacts does not prevent you from getting a permit.
If you need glasses to pass the vision test, your permit will have Restriction Code B.
Yes, if you no longer need corrective lenses and can meet the vision standard without them. Georgia DDS requires you to visit a Customer Service Center and pass the vision exam to remove a corrective-lenses restriction; restriction changes cannot be completed through Online Services.
After the vision step, the rest of the Class CP application follows the standard permit process. Use the document guide and fees guide for those requirements.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
