Georgia requires applicants to be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. Requirements differ slightly for teens versus adults.
The normal rule is a supervisor who is at least 21, holds a valid license that qualifies them to drive the Class C vehicle being used, is fit and capable of exercising control, and sits beside the permit holder. Georgia law also has a narrow exception for certain disabled parents or guardians with qualifying handicap identification.
For ordinary supervised practice, the person beside the learner should meet all of these requirements:
| Situation | What Applies |
|---|---|
| Normal supervisor | 21+, valid qualifying license, fit/capable, seated beside the learner |
| Qualifying disabled parent/guardian | Georgia law provides a narrow exception when the statutory disability/handicap-identification conditions are met |
| 40-hour Class D certification | A parent, guardian, or duly authorized DDS-certified driver education instructor may swear or affirm completion |
Georgia law provides a specific exception for certain disabled parents or guardians who meet the statutory handicap-identification conditions. This is a narrow exception; it does not remove the normal 21+ licensed-supervisor rule for other situations.
Yes. The supervisor does not have to be the learner's parent. A grandparent, adult sibling, other relative, family friend, instructor, or another adult can supervise if that person meets the actual Georgia requirements.
| Supervisor Type | Can They Supervise? |
|---|---|
| Parent or guardian | Yes, if they meet the supervisor requirements |
| Grandparent or adult sibling | Yes, if 21+ and properly licensed, fit/capable, and seated beside the learner |
| Family friend or other trusted adult | Yes, if all requirements are met |
| DDS-certified driving instructor | Yes, when properly qualified for the vehicle and instruction |
Yes. Relationship is not the key test. The person must satisfy Georgia's supervisor age, license, seating, and fitness requirements.
No. The supervisor must hold a valid qualifying license. If the license has expired or is suspended, use another qualified supervisor before continuing practice.
If the person beside the learner no longer meets the supervisor requirements, the permit holder should not continue driving until another qualifying supervisor is in place.
For the under-18 permit application itself, Georgia DDS can allow a parent/guardian, responsible adult, or authorized driver training instructor to accompany/sign as applicable. A standard Class CP knowledge-test visit is walk-in, so there is no permit-test appointment slot to lose.
For teen Class D eligibility, Georgia requires 40 hours of supervised driving, including 6 hours at night. A formal driving log is not required by DDS, although families can use the Parent/Teen Driving Guide to track practice.
The detailed hour-counting rules belong to the Required Practice Hours page. This page should focus on who may supervise and who may certify completion.
For the Class D affidavit, a parent, guardian, or duly authorized DDS-certified driver education instructor may certify completion. See the Required Practice Hours guidance for the full 40-hour and nighttime-hour rules.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
