You must wait a mandatory 10-day practice period after receiving your permit before taking the Delaware DMV road skills test.
For applicants who actually need a Delaware DMV road skills test, the road test may be taken at least 10 days after passing the knowledge exam.
Not to the standard Level One GDL path. Most teens with a valid qualifying Driver Education Certificate do not take a separate DMV road test. The 10-day minimum matters for applicants who actually need the DMV road skills test, including the normal adult Class D testing path.
For the DMV road-test path, Delaware measures the minimum from the date you pass the knowledge exam. Do not calculate it only from the date printed on the learner permit.
| Applicant Type | Timing | Upgrade Path |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Level One teen | 12 months of valid driving authority | Complete the GDL requirements; the permit can automatically convert to Class D without a standard DMV road test. |
| Adult Class D learner | At least 10 days after passing the knowledge exam | Pass the DMV road skills test. |
| Teen who requires DMV testing | Depends on the reason DMV testing is required | Follow the applicable DMV examination steps rather than assuming the standard GDL auto-conversion path. |
Schedule your driving test in advance, availability varies by location. Road exams are given Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday only. The DMV does not conduct road tests on Wednesdays. Appointments fill quickly, especially in Wilmington and Dover. The 50-hour log is submitted to the Department of Education after the first 6 months. There is no separate road test scheduling step for GDL teens.
Can I schedule my Delaware road test before the 10 days are over if the test date is later? You may book ahead when the scheduler offers an eligible future date, but the actual road-test date must be on or after your earliest legal test date. An appointment does not override the 10-day rule.
If you fail the road test, you do not wait another six months. Delaware requires another 10-day wait before the next road-test attempt.
For a Level One holder who turns 18, Delaware allows a choice: finish the 12-month GDL path or move to the adult DMV testing path. Choosing the adult path does not mean taking the road test immediately. The applicant must complete the required DMV eye, knowledge, and road-skills exams, with the road test available at least 10 days after passing the knowledge exam.
A common timing mistake is booking a road test before the applicant is legally eligible. Calculate the 10-day period from the knowledge-test pass date if you are on the adult DMV-testing path.
Vehicle eligibility, insurance, registration, and test-day equipment checks are covered in the dedicated Vehicle Requirements and Road Test Documents guides.
| Item | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Class D Driver License | $50.00 | Paid at application; the learner-permit phase is included in the Class D licensing fee. |
| No-Show/Cancellation Fee | $25.00 | A no-show fee may be charged if you fail to appear for your scheduled appointment. |
For road-test day, bring the valid learner permit and use a legally eligible, registered, insured vehicle. The accompanying licensed driver must be at least 21 and remain on site. See the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements pages for the full checklist.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
