Your vehicle must meet specific safety and legal standards to be eligible for the Delaware DMV road test. Using an unacceptable or unsafe vehicle can cause the DMV to refuse, cancel, or reschedule the road test before it begins; that is not the same as failing a completed driving exam.
You do not need to own the test vehicle. You can use a parent’s, friend’s, or other eligible vehicle if it is street-legal, registered, insured, and in safe working condition. The accompanying driver must be 21+ with a valid license and must stay on site to drive the vehicle if you fail.
Most standard passenger vehicles are acceptable. The following vehicle types are prohibited for the road test:
A Dover applicant arrived in a family-owned work van with commercial plates. The examiner refused the test because commercial vehicles are not permitted for standard Class D road tests.
See the Delaware learner's permit guide for complete requirements.
Yes. You do not have to own the test vehicle. A parent’s, friend’s, or other borrowed vehicle can be used if it has current registration and insurance, is the proper vehicle class, and passes the DMV safety check.
At the Greater Wilmington location, an applicant was turned away because the passenger-side mirror was cracked and taped, creating a distorted view. This failed the pre-test safety check.
The test vehicle must have current registration and valid insurance. The applicant must also have a valid learner permit and arrive with a licensed accompanying driver age 21+ who remains on site.

Is electronic proof of insurance accepted for the Delaware road test? Yes. Delaware DMV accepts an original or electronic insurance card for the road-test vehicle.
At the Delaware City office, a driver's test was over in seconds. The examiner started the car, saw the check engine light illuminated, and ended the appointment.
What happens if my test vehicle has less than half a tank of gas? Delaware DMV may reschedule the road test if the vehicle has less than half a tank. Check the fuel level before leaving for the appointment.
Intelligent Parking Assist Technology must be turned off or disabled before the exam, the examiner will not allow it. No cell phone use or music is permitted during the road test. Road tests are not offered on Wednesdays. After failing, wait at least 10 days before retaking. Road test lasts approximately 30 minutes. If you do not pass within 12 months of the knowledge exam, you must reapply for the learner's permit. See the full road test requirements at dmv.de.gov. For Delaware road-test vehicle checks and problems that can cancel or reschedule the exam, see the Delaware learner's permit guide at shoro.ai.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
