Delaware Permit Next Steps: First 6 Months, Practice, and Class D Upgrade

After receiving your Delaware Level One Learner's Permit, follow a set sequence of GDL milestones to reach your Class D license.

What do I do after I get my learner's permit in Delaware?

After receiving your Delaware Level One Learner's Permit, follow a set sequence of GDL milestones to reach your Class D license. You cannot drive unsupervised until you have held your permit for six months and submitted your certified driving log to the Department of Education.

First Six Months: Required Practice and GDL Steps

During the first six months, complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. The detailed logging and certification process belongs in the Required Practice Hours guide.

• Who can supervise: A properly licensed parent or guardian may supervise. Another approved supervisor must be at least 25 and have held a Class D license for at least five years.
• Where the log goes: The completed certification is submitted through the Department of Education process, not treated as a DMV road-test-day document.

Driver Education vs. Post-Permit GDL Practice

For the standard teen Level One path, approved driver education is completed before the Level One permit is issued. That course includes the required classroom, behind-the-wheel, observation, and testing components.

After the permit is issued, the next milestone is the first six months of supervised GDL practice and the required 50-hour certification. This six-month point is a GDL phase change, not a standard teen DMV road-test waiting period.

Standard Level One teens with a valid qualifying Driver Education Certificate generally do not take a separate DMV road test. Applicants who actually require DMV testing should follow the dedicated Road Test & License guides.

Driving Privileges After the First Six Months

After the first six months of valid driving authority and completion of the required certification, an eligible Level One holder moves into the second GDL phase and may drive unsupervised from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Other Level One restrictions still apply. For the full passenger, nighttime, supervision, and device rules, use the dedicated Permit Driving Rules guide rather than treating road-test preparation as the main next step for every teen.

What changes after the first 6 months of a Delaware Level One permit?

After six months of valid driving authority, once the required 50-hour certification is completed, an eligible Level One holder moves into the second GDL phase. Limited unsupervised driving is then allowed from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., while the remaining GDL restrictions still apply. See Delaware DMV GDL rules.

Do Delaware Level One teens have to take another DMV road test?

Usually not. A standard Level One teen with a valid qualifying Driver Education Certificate normally follows the GDL path without another DMV road test. DMV testing may still be required in specific cases, so applicants outside the standard path should follow the current DMV instructions.

Automatic Class D Conversion

Your Level One permit automatically converts to a Class D license after 12 months of valid driving authority when the eligibility requirements are met. Time spent suspended, revoked, or canceled does not count toward that 12-month period, and equivalent valid-driving time must be completed afterward.

The conversion is not created by a separate DMV road test or a new standard $50 Class D payment at the end of the Level One period. If you need a new physical credential or another DMV transaction, follow the current DMV instructions for that transaction.

When does a Delaware Level One permit automatically become a Class D license?

The Level One permit can automatically convert after 12 months of valid driving authority when the GDL requirements are met. The conversion is based on completing the required valid-driving period, not on taking a routine second road test.

What happens to my Class D upgrade date if my Level One permit is suspended? Time spent suspended, revoked, or canceled does not count toward the 12 months of valid driving authority. Equivalent valid-driving time must be completed afterward, so the Class D eligibility date moves later.
