Delaware 50-Hour Driving Log: What Counts, How to Submit, and Sponsor Rules

Delaware 50-hour driving log: what counts, how to submit, and sponsor rules apply from the day your permit is issued. The key details are below.

How many hours do I need to practice driving with a permit in Delaware?

Teens aged 16-17 must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, during the first six months of a Level 1 Learner's Permit. Adults 18 and older have no state-mandated practice hour requirement.

Hour Requirements by Age Group

• The 50-hour rule is part of Delaware's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.
• Adult learners have no state-mandated practice hour requirement, but should practice sufficient hours to pass the road skills exam.

What Counts Toward Your Required Practice Time

• Counts: Hours driven with a licensed parent, guardian, or approved sponsor (25+, 5+ years licensed) while you hold your Level 1 Permit.
• Does NOT Count: Time spent driving with a professional instructor during a driver's education course. Those behind-the-wheel hours are separate and do not apply to the 50-hour practice requirement.
• Practice must cover varied conditions: residential streets, business districts, highways like DE-1 or I-95, and required night driving.

Delaware 50-Hour Driving Log: How to Record, Sign, and Submit

Yes. Teen permit holders must log all 50 supervised driving hours. Your sponsor must certify the log and submit it to the Department of Education after your first six months, not the DMV. Your sponsor must certify the log and submit it to the Department of Education after your first six months, not the DMV.

How to Log Your Supervised Driving Hours

• Use a physical log sheet with columns for Date, Start/End Time, Total Minutes, Night/Day, and Supervisor Signature.
• Track digitally using a GPS-based app to automatically record routes and duration.
• Log consistently after each session. Do not fill in the log retroactively.

The sponsor can withdraw their endorsement at any time, canceling the teen's driving privileges; download GDL info from dmv.de.gov. See sponsor liability rules at the DMV teen driving page.

Log Verification and Common Issues

• Your sponsor certifies the log, confirming the hours are accurate before submitting to the Department of Education.
• Department of Education reviewers check the log for completeness and obvious inconsistencies before authorizing the next GDL phase.
• They may spot-check for plausibility, like an unrealistic number of hours logged in a single day.

A Dover teen submitted a log showing 15 hours of driving in one 24-hour period. The Driver Ed teacher questioned the sponsor, who admitted to poor record-keeping and retroactive estimation. A new, accurate log was required, delaying the teen's advancement by a month.

At the Wilmington DMV, a sponsor forgot to log hours for two months. They tried to estimate 30 hours retroactively but could not provide specific dates or times. The family had to restart the logging process from the current date, extending the permit's supervised phase.

A Newark teen completed driver's ed and assumed the 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction counted toward the 50. Their log was rejected for being 6 hours short, requiring extra practice sessions before certification.

Sponsor Liability and Certification

• By signing, the sponsor swears the logged hours are true.
• Sponsors are jointly liable for any damages caused by the teen driver's negligence.
• A sponsor can withdraw their endorsement at the DMV, canceling the permit.

Practical Tips for Delaware Permit Holders

• Schedule your road test at the Wilmington DMV for a Tuesday afternoon to avoid the long waits common on Mondays and Saturdays, which often cause rushed performances and failure.
• Bring two proofs of Delaware residency with your exact current address when applying for your permit. A P.O. Box or a parent's outdated license can cause immediate rejection and require a return trip.
• Practice parallel parking in a standard sedan, not a large SUV, before your test at the Dover DMV. Using an unfamiliar or oversized vehicle on test day is a leading cause of automatic failure on the maneuver.

The Level One Learner's Permit must be in the permit holder's possession every time they drive. The permit holder AND all passengers must wear a seatbelt while in motion. When supervision is required, no person other than the supervising driver may sit in the front seat. During unsupervised driving in the second 6 months, only one other passenger is allowed, the family exception applies only when the supervisor is in the car. The sponsor can withdraw their endorsement even after the 12-month GDL program ends, until the teen turns 18. A cell phone first offense brings a 1-month suspension; each subsequent offense brings a 3-month suspension. Any GDL restriction violation = 2-month suspension (first), 4-month (subsequent).
