Yes. Delaware offers the Class D learner's permit knowledge test in multiple languages.

Can I take the permit test in a language other than English in Delaware?

Yes. The Delaware DMV offers the Class D learner's permit knowledge test in multiple languages. You select your preferred language on the testing kiosk before starting the exam.

Languages Available for the Delaware Permit Test

The Delaware permit test is available in these languages to serve the state's diverse population. Download driver manuals in your language from dmv.de.gov/menu/forms_manuals.shtml.

• English (default)
• Spanish
• Chinese
• Korean
• Haitian Creole

A Spanish-speaking applicant in Wilmington can take the entire permit test in Spanish. A Korean speaker in Dover can select Korean on the kiosk. A Chinese-speaking applicant can select Chinese on a supported Delaware DMV testing kiosk.

Audio Support: Audio tests with headphones are available upon request at the DMV counter before you start. Call ahead to arrange this accommodation: Delaware City 302-326-5000, Wilmington 302-434-3200, Dover 302-744-2500, Georgetown 302-853-1000.

Are official Delaware practice tests available in languages other than English?

Yes, but the official sample-test language list is narrower than the full live-test language list. Delaware DMV currently provides General Driver Knowledge samples in English, Spanish, and Haitian, plus a separate Traffic Sign Identification practice test.

How to Choose a Test Language or Use a Translator

Select your language directly on the DMV kiosk's touchscreen. No prior request is needed for the listed languages.

Interpreter Availability: If your language is not listed, Delaware Regulation 2221 covers translators for applicants who cannot read or speak English. Contact your local DMV office in advance to arrange this.

• The translator can only translate the question text, not explain concepts or suggest answers.
• For official document translation (e.g., foreign licenses), certified translations are required.
• The highway warning and directional sign portion must be completed and passed without translator assistance.

Study the Delaware Driver Manual in your chosen test language. The test questions are drawn directly from it.

• Initial driver-license and learner-permit applications are completed in person at a Delaware DMV office.
• Call ahead to confirm your language is available on the kiosk that day.
• Bring an interpreter if your language is not in the five supported options.

Can a family member or friend translate my Delaware permit test?

An applicant may use a translator under Delaware's translator rules when needed, but the translator may read or translate the question and answer choices only. They cannot explain the rule, coach the applicant, or suggest an answer.

Can my translator help me with Delaware road-sign questions? No. The highway warning and directional sign portion must be taken and passed without translator assistance.

What happens if I fail Delaware's automated sign test twice while using a translator?

After failing the automated highway-sign test on two separate occasions, Delaware's translator regulation provides for a paper highway-sign test. The sign portion still has to be completed without translator help.

Written-Test Language Rules vs. Road-Test Language Rules

Written-test language support and road-test language support are separate. A translator may assist with written questions when allowed, but the highway warning and directional sign portion must be completed without translator help. For examiner-language and interpreter rules during the skills test, use the separate Road Test Language guide.

Even if you take the knowledge test in another language, learn common English traffic words such as Stop, Yield, and Merge because they appear on real road signs.
