Colorado Permit Holding Period: 12-Month Wait, Road Test Scheduling, and Age Rules

The waiting period depends entirely on your age. For permit eligibility, see the Colorado learner's permit guide.

How Long Is the Colorado Learner's Permit Holding Period - and When Can You Book the Road Test?

• Minors (Under 18): Mandatory 12-month (365-day) holding period from your permit issue date.
• Adults (18+): No mandatory waiting period. You can schedule a test immediately.

This minimum permit holding period is part of Colorado's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system to build experience.

Mandatory Waiting Period and Exceptions

Colorado enforces strict timelines to ensure new drivers gain sufficient supervised practice.

• Why the 12-Month Wait Exists: The state requires minors to log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) over four seasons, reducing crash risk.
• Exceptions to Shorten the Wait: There are no legal exceptions to shorten the 12-month period for minors. Adults have no wait, so no shortening is needed.
• Consequences of Testing Too Early: If you schedule your test before your 365 days are complete, the testing school or DMV will cancel your appointment and you will lose any fees paid.

Example of a Waiting Period Violation: A teen in Fort Collins scheduled a test for January 14, 2026, because their permit was issued on January 15, 2025. The school refused to administer the test, citing the missing day. They had to rebook three weeks later.

Can you book a Colorado road test before your 12 months are complete if the test date is later?

Possibly. Booking rules are set by the approved testing provider, so a provider may let you reserve a later date in advance. The test itself cannot be administered before you meet Colorado's statutory eligibility requirements.

Is the Colorado 12-month permit period exactly 365 days?

Use the legal rule of 12 full months from the permit issue date rather than relying on a simple 365-day count. Check the permit issue date and use the corresponding eligibility date one year later.

What to Do During the Waiting Period

Use the 12 months to meet all requirements for your license upgrade.

• Log all 50 hours on the Drive Time Log (Form DR 2324).
• If under 16 years and 6 months, complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training.
• Practice consistently in varied conditions, including highway driving in Denver and mountain roads near Colorado Springs.

Before You Arrive: Photocopy your completed DR 2324 log sheet before your test. If the original is lost or damaged at the DMV, you have a backup to avoid rescheduling and restarting the logging process.

When Can You Move From a Colorado Permit to a Driver License?

You can upgrade after meeting all age-based requirements.

Can an adult take the Colorado road test immediately after getting a permit?

Drivers age 18 or older do not have a minimum Colorado permit-holding period under the current rules. Once the permit is valid and the applicant is ready and otherwise eligible, the road test can be scheduled with an approved provider.

Documents Needed When Moving From a Permit to a License

Bring the valid permit and any age/path-specific forms required for license issuance. Keep the full document checklist in the dedicated Road Test Documents guide so this page stays focused on timing.

When Should You Book the Colorado Driving Test - and How Far in Advance?

Booking windows are set by the approved testing provider. A minor can book ahead if the provider allows it, but the actual test date must be after the applicant has satisfied the 12-month permit-holding requirement. Adults 18 and older do not have the same minimum holding period.

Availability, cancellations, weather policies, and rescheduling rules vary by provider. Keep detailed location and booking strategy in the dedicated road-test-location guide.

How Early Can You Book a Colorado Road Test?

How far ahead you can book depends on the approved testing provider. Confirm its calendar and cancellation policy directly. For current state fees, the regular instruction permit is $20 and the standard driver/minor driver license is $34; private road-test charges are set by the testing provider.

Colorado Road Test Retakes and the Permit Holding Period

Failing the Colorado road test does not restart a minor's 12-month permit-holding period.

Regular drive tests are primarily handled by approved testing providers, so the applicant generally rebooks with a provider and pays that provider's applicable testing charge. Do not treat a commercial-school road test as an in-office State DMV retest.

Out-of-state minor permit holders are a separate case. A 16- or 17-year-old with a valid out-of-state permit may be allowed one Colorado drive test on that permit after meeting the statutory requirements, including holding a valid permit for at least 12 months. Do not assume every applicant must restart the 12-month clock from the date a Colorado permit is issued.

How long must you wait after failing the Colorado road test?

You must wait until at least the next business day before another complete drive test. The actual retest date can be later depending on the approved testing provider's availability.
