Driving Restrictions
Colorado Learner's Permit Driving Restrictions: Supervision, Curfew, and Passenger Rules
No. You cannot drive alone with a Colorado learner's permit. For the full rules, see the Colorado learner's permit.
Can You Drive Alone With a Colorado Learner's Permit - or Is a Supervisor Always Required?
No. You cannot drive alone with a Colorado learner's permit. For the full rules, see the Colorado learner's permit guide. A legally qualified supervisor must be present as required by Colorado law. Driving unsupervised violates Colorado's instruction-permit requirements and is a Class A traffic infraction; it is not automatically the same offense as having no valid license.
Where Can You Drive With a Colorado Learner's Permit?
With a permit, you may practice on Colorado roadways in a vehicle covered by the applicable permit or license class, but only with the required supervision. If you are under 18, separate supervised-practice requirements apply before licensing, including the required driving log. Drivers 18 or older do not have that same 50-hour logged-practice requirement.
Colorado Permit Supervisor and Passenger Rules
A Colorado permit holder must drive with a legally qualified supervisor in the required position. The exact supervisor category and authorization matter; see the dedicated supervisor requirements guide for the full rules.
Can friends ride with you while you have a Colorado learner's permit?
Yes, a friend is not automatically barred from riding with a supervised permit holder. The vehicle must still comply with Colorado's supervision and seat-belt rules. The stricter first-six-month and second-six-month passenger limits apply after a minor driver license is issued, subject to the statutory exceptions.
What if your supervisor uses a phone while supervising you? Colorado's distracted-driving statute applies to the person operating the vehicle, so the supervising passenger is not automatically cited under that driver phone law merely for using a phone. The supervisor should still stay attentive and capable of supervising safely.
Night Driving, School Trips, and Other Colorado Permit Restrictions
Can you drive between midnight and 5 a.m. with a Colorado learner's permit?
A supervised permit drive is not automatically barred just because it is between midnight and 5 a.m. The separate minor-license curfew applies after licensing, with statutory exceptions. If you are under 18, night practice also counts toward the separate practice-hour requirement.
Can I drive on the freeway with a learner's permit in Colorado? Yes, if the vehicle is covered by your permit/class and your legally qualified supervisor is present. Use extra caution before practicing higher-speed merging or mountain driving.
Can you drive through a drive-thru? Yes, but the same supervision requirement applies while you are operating the vehicle on a roadway or other area covered by the driving rules.
What if you only need to move a car on private property? Colorado's instruction-permit supervision statute is written around driving on roadways and highways. Do not assume that every movement on private property is governed by the same provision. Once you enter a public roadway, the permit supervision rules apply.
Can I drive to school with a learner's permit in Colorado? Yes, but not alone. A legally qualified supervisor must be present as required by the permit.
Can you drive in another state with a Colorado learner's permit?
Possibly, but Colorado cannot decide another state's rules. Before crossing state lines, check whether the destination state recognizes an out-of-state learner's permit and what supervision or age rules it applies.
Phone, Alcohol, Seat Belt, and Other Safety Rules
Permit holders must follow Colorado's general traffic-safety laws in addition to permit supervision rules.
- Mobile devices: Colorado prohibits prohibited handheld or manual use of a mobile electronic device while driving. Hands-free operation is allowed, subject to the law's exceptions.
- Alcohol/Drugs: Under-21 drivers are subject to Colorado's UDD rules, while DWAI and DUI remain separate offenses. Detailed penalties belong in the DUI-on-a-permit guide.
- Seat belts: Every occupant must follow the applicable Colorado restraint rules.
Can you use hands-free GPS or make a hands-free call with a Colorado permit?
Yes. Colorado's current hands-free law allows hands-free operation, such as a mounted device, Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, or speakerphone, while prohibited handheld/manual use remains restricted.
Penalties depend on the specific violation. See the dedicated traffic-violation and DUI guidance for points, suspension, or other consequences instead of treating every permit-rule violation the same way.
Common Colorado Learner's Permit Restriction Violations
- A teen in Aurora missed the bus and drove alone to school. Police pulled them over two blocks away. Result: $100 fine, permit invalidated, and a restart of the 12-month waiting period.
- A learner in Lakewood practiced with their licensed parent asleep in the back seat. A traffic stop led to a charge of unsupervised driving because the supervisor was not in the front passenger seat.
- A learner who manually holds or uses a phone while driving can violate Colorado's current hands-free law. Detailed phone penalties are covered in the traffic-violations guide.
How to Stay Within Colorado Learner's Permit Restrictions
- If you are under 18, keep the required driving log current. The detailed 50-hour and night-driving rules belong in the Required Practice Hours guide.
- Check that your supervisor is legally qualified before each drive. A Colorado license is the normal route for the applicable supervisor categories. The military exception requires a valid out-of-state license plus proper military identification; military ID by itself is not enough.
- Keep testing and appointment logistics separate from driving restrictions. Use the appointments guide for office timing and booking questions.
Do Colorado permit passenger rules change when you receive your minor driver's license?
Yes. A supervised learner's permit and a minor driver license are different stages. The post-license passenger and midnight-to-5 a.m. restrictions apply after the minor license is issued, while supervised permit driving follows the permit supervision rules.
Colorado Learner's Permit Rules vs. Minor Driver License Rules
| Rule | Learner's Permit Stage | Minor Driver License Stage |
|---|---|---|
| Driving Alone | No. Legally required supervision applies. | Solo driving is allowed once properly licensed, subject to minor-driver restrictions. |
| Midnight-5 a.m. | Supervised permit driving is not automatically barred by the minor-license curfew. | Minor drivers face the statutory midnight-5 a.m. restriction during the first year, subject to exceptions. |
| Passengers Under 21 | No blanket "zero friends" rule when a qualifying adult supervisor is present; other safety rules still apply. | First six months and second six months have separate passenger limits, subject to statutory exceptions. |
| Mobile Device Use | Colorado's current hands-free law applies. | The same current hands-free law applies. |
| Practice Hours | Under-18 applicants must meet the required logged practice before licensing. | The practice-hour requirement is completed before issuance of the minor driver license. |
