Original California learner-permit applicants complete the knowledge test at a DMV field office as part of the permit application process. The test is computer-based and uses multiple-choice questions from the California Driver's Handbook. In-office knowledge testing must begin before 4:30 PM.
For an original learner-permit application, the knowledge test is taken at a California DMV field office. Online eLearning should not be presented as an original-permit testing option.
| Question | Current California DMV rule |
|---|---|
| Where is the original permit knowledge test taken? | At a DMV field office. |
| How is it administered? | Computer-based multiple-choice knowledge test, with assistance options available through DMV when needed. |
| Passing standard | 80%. |
| Latest in-office start time | Before 4:30 PM. |
| Can an original permit applicant use eLearning? | No. eLearning is limited to eligible noncommercial Class C renewal applicants. |
At a DMV field office, the standard knowledge test is administered on a touchscreen computer. Paper, audio, or other assisted formats may be available in certain situations, including approved testing accommodations.
For question count, multiple-choice structure, and tested topics, use the dedicated Permit Test Format guide. Detailed accommodation rules belong on the Disability Accommodations page.
The in-office TouchScreen test is the standard format. DMV says paper and audio testing are available in certain cases, including as testing accommodations, so a paper test should not be presented as a universal pick-any-format option.
DMV eLearning is available only to eligible noncommercial Class C renewal applicants. It is not the knowledge-test route for a first-time learner-permit applicant.
California DMV provides free official Class C sample tests. These are short 10-question samples that show the kinds of questions DMV asks; they are not a full-length replica of the live exam or its exact interface.
For detailed practice-test recommendations, use the dedicated California Permit Practice Tests page.
The original Class C application fee is $46. Bring the identity and residency documents required for your credential path, and arrive early enough to begin the knowledge test before 4:30 PM.
Do not apply the REAL ID requirement of two residency documents to every permit applicant. DMV offices are closed on weekends, so Saturday is not a permit-testing option.
For an original Class C application, the vision check, photo, and knowledge test are normally handled as parts of the DMV application transaction. Office processing can vary, so arrive with enough time to complete the required steps.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
