California Full Privilege License Driving Rules
California Full Privilege License — What Changes & What Matters
You passed. No more restrictions — here's what changes and what matters as a full California driver.
California Full Privilege License holders face no GDL restrictions but operate under one of the most comprehensive traffic law frameworks in the country. The Negligent Operator Treatment System triggers probation at 4 points in 12 months. The Hands-Free law applies to every driver at every moment, including at red lights. One at-fault accident in California's already-expensive insurance market typically raises premiums more than in most other states. Breaking it down — California's adult NOTS thresholds, DUI consequences, and the ongoing laws that affect every California driver.

Do These — As a Full Privilege License Driver
What should full California drivers know about insurance in California? How do I keep my driving record clean? When does a California license need to be renewed in California?
- Request Your Driving Abstract AnnuallyOrder it from the California DMV. Know what insurers see before they do — errors on your abstract can be disputed.
- Shop Your Insurance AnnuallyRates shift every year — loyalty rarely pays. Compare quotes at renewal. A clean 3-year record qualifies for significant discounts.
- Keep Your Driving Abstract Clean3 years no tickets, no claims = measurably lower premiums. Abstract is pulled at every renewal and driving-related job application.
- Update Your Address with the DMV Within 10 DaysCalifornia law requires you to notify the DMV within 10 days of moving. Missing a renewal notice because your address is outdated is your problem.
- Consider Higher Liability CoverageCalifornia minimum is $200,000 — most advisors recommend $1–2 million. Costs little extra, protects everything.
Don't Do These — As a Full Privilege License Driver
What are the most common mistakes full California drivers make in California? What happens if you drive impaired with a Full Privilege License? Can a Full Privilege License license be suspended?
- Don't Assume a Drink or Two Is FineCalifornia can charge DUI even below 0.08% if you show visible impairment. If you are under 21, your limit is still 0.01%. Zero is always the safest number when driving.
- Don't Let Tickets Stack UpTwo minor convictions within 3 years can trigger an insurance surcharge. Three or more = high-risk policy territory.
- Don't Admit Fault at the SceneExchange info, call police if needed, report to insurer — never say "it was my fault." That's determined by the insurer, not you.
- Don't Lend Your Car CarelesslyWhoever drives your car uses your insurance. An at-fault accident by another driver in your vehicle hits your record and rates.
- Don't Drive for Rideshare Without Commercial CoveragePersonal insurance doesn't cover Uber/Lyft driving. You need a commercial endorsement — check with your insurer first.
