Once you hold a valid Arkansas instruction permit, the next steps are supervised practice, the Arkansas State Police skills test, and then license issuance through DFA. Arkansas no longer has the former 30-day skills-test waiting period; teen GDL age and clean-driving rules are separate from test scheduling.
Arkansas no longer requires the former 30-day waiting period before the skills test. You need a valid instruction permit before taking the road test. For the full timing rules, see the Waiting Period — Road Test guidance.
For teen drivers, a serious traffic violation or at-fault accident can delay progression through Arkansas's graduated licensing stages. That clean-record rule is separate from whether you may schedule the skills test.
| Age | Typical next license stage after completing required testing |
|---|---|
| 14–15 | Learner's License |
| 16–17 | Intermediate License |
| 18+ | Class D license |
While driving on an instruction permit, the required licensed supervisor must be at least 21 and seated beside you. Phone rules depend on age: drivers under 18 cannot use handheld or hands-free wireless devices except for emergencies; drivers ages 18–20 may use hands-free devices but face handheld restrictions.
Your next credential depends mainly on age. Applicants ages 14–15 move toward a Learner's License, ages 16–17 toward an Intermediate License, and applicants 18 or older toward the applicable Class D license after completing the required testing and DFA issuance steps. Passing the skills test is one step; DFA still issues the credential.

Arkansas does not require a state minimum practice-hour total before the skills test; see the Required Practice Hours guide for the full rule.
Practice the skills you will need in normal traffic, including controlled turns, lane positioning, stopping, backing, observation, and safe interaction with other road users. Review the current Arkansas Driver License Study Guide before test day.
Also make sure the vehicle you plan to use is safe and test-ready. Detailed equipment rules belong on the Vehicle Requirements page.
Book the skills test through an Arkansas State Police Driver Examination site. Bring your original instruction permit, a valid licensed driver, the test vehicle's current registration, and current proof of insurance.
If you drive to the testing site under your instruction permit, the supervising driver must meet the 21+ supervision rule. The current ASP checklist also allows an unrestricted Class D driver age 16 or older to drive the applicant to the testing site.
There is no $50 ASP road-test fee. Credential fees depend on the license stage and age.
Check the dedicated Road Test Documents and Vehicle Requirements pages before the appointment so this overview does not replace those full checklists.
Passing the ASP skills test does not itself issue your new license. Complete the applicable license-issuance step with DFA and bring any documents DFA requires for your age and credential. Keep your current credential with you until DFA issues the next one.
No. A passing skills-test result and license issuance are separate steps. Your instruction permit is not automatically replaced at the moment the examiner marks the road test as passed.
Do not treat a passed road test as an unrestricted license. Until DFA issues the next credential, follow the rules that apply to the valid credential you currently hold. If you still drive under the instruction permit, keep following its supervision restrictions.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."

"The readiness score gives you so much confidence. I knew exactly when I was ready to take the test. Highly recommend Shoro for anyone nervous about their exam."
