Arkansas Permit Test Session Rules: No Timer, No Breaks, Kiosk Abandonment Fails You

No countdown timer appears on the Arkansas permit test. The Arkansas State Police uses a session-based policy instead. You must finish the 25-question exam within the testing center's operating hours.

Most applicants complete it in 15 to 20 minutes. Breaks are strictly prohibited, leaving your kiosk triggers automatic failure.

You'll need an appointment before showing up. Schedule your knowledge test through ASP's online system and arrive 15 minutes early. Walk-ins aren't accepted at most Troop offices.

All test questions come from the official Arkansas Driver License Study Guide.

How Does the Untimed Arkansas Permit Test Format Work?

No timer appears on screen, your only constraint is the testing session window (typically 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM). Average completion is 15 to 20 minutes. Use the skip function for hard questions; skipped items reappear at the end.

• Question count: 25 multiple-choice questions pulled from the driver's manual
• Passing score: 20 correct answers (80%)
• Average completion: 15 to 20 minutes
• Session windows: Generally 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, though hours vary by Troop location

Pace yourself however you want. Rushing kills more prepared applicants than anything else. The lack of a timer exists so you can read questions carefully, use it.

Is there a time limit for each Arkansas permit-test question?

ASP does not publish a per-question countdown for the non-commercial knowledge test. The article's untimed rule refers to the exam itself, not to unlimited access to the testing site.

Can you take as long as you need on the Arkansas permit test?

You can work without a published per-question timer, but the testing location still has set written-testing hours. Arrive early enough to finish within that site's testing window.

If Testing Hours End Before You Finish: What Happens Next

No timer doesn't mean unlimited time. You must finish before the testing window closes. Starting late or taking too long gets your exam terminated mid-question.

At the Little Rock (Troop A) office, you cannot start a new test after 4:00 PM even though the building closes at 5:00 PM. Centers often stop admitting new testers 30-60 minutes before closing.

Show up at the Lowell (Troop L) office at 1:05 PM for a 1:00 PM appointment? They may turn you away entirely. Schedule for the beginning of a session, 1:00 PM sharp, not 1:30 PM.

Can you start the Arkansas permit test close to the site's closing time?

Do not rely on the building's general closing time. ASP troop pages publish specific written-testing windows, and some end well before the office itself closes. Check the exact site schedule before you go.

If the test kiosk freezes or stops working, tell the examiner immediately and see the Failed Knowledge Test guide for how technical interruptions differ from an ordinary failed attempt.

Can You Take a Break During the Arkansas Permit Exam?

No. Leaving your kiosk for any reason voids the test immediately, bathroom trips, phone checks, and stepping away to ask a question all count as abandoning the session. Visit the restroom before check-in, not after your name is called.

1. Stay at the kiosk from start to finish, no exceptions
2. Most kiosks use facial monitoring, so moving out of frame can trigger a lockout
3. Leaving for the restroom or to check your phone gets flagged as testing fraud

The only exceptions are pre-approved medical accommodations under the ADA or a genuine facility emergency like a fire alarm.

Manage Time and Avoid Pressure on Test Day

Because there is no countdown timer, most time pressure comes from the testing-site window and from rushing yourself. Read each question carefully and avoid booking so late that the site's closing time becomes a distraction.

If a question stalls you, Arkansas's kiosk allows up to two skipped questions; skipped items can return at the end. For failure and retake rules, use the dedicated Failed Knowledge Test page rather than mixing retake timing into this section.

Extended-Time and Break Accommodations in Arkansas

If a disability affects how you can take the knowledge test, review the dedicated Disability Accommodations page and arrange any approved accommodation through the proper Arkansas process before test day.

Arkansas Permit Test Retake Rules

If you fail the knowledge test, Arkansas requires a five-calendar-day wait before retesting. Use the dedicated Failed Knowledge Test page for rescheduling, fees, and retake preparation.
