The Arkansas State Police (ASP) administers all driving skills tests in English only. Language accommodations are limited. Plan ahead if you need interpreter assistance.
None, the road skills test is conducted in English only at all ASP Driver Examination sites. No translated instruction sheets or multilingual examiners are available for the driving test. The written knowledge test kiosk, by contrast, offers Spanish.
You cannot take the Arkansas road test in another language. All verbal instructions from the examiner are in English. ASP does not provide interpreters.
Download the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide to review standard driving commands before your test.
Frankly, this catches many applicants off guard. The written test has multiple language options, but the road test? English only.
Standard interpreter requests are not accommodated for the road skills test. ADA accommodations for language-related cognitive disabilities require a formal request to ASP Headquarters with medical documentation at least 5 business days before the test. Showing up without prior approval means testing in English.
If you need an interpreter, you must arrange it yourself. Get approval before your test date from the specific ASP Troop location.
Email the DL Support Office for interpreter policy questions. Confirm Troop-specific contacts via the ASP driver examination page.
Vehicle eligibility is separate from language rules. If the vehicle does not meet the pre-test mechanical requirements, the skills test will not begin until an acceptable vehicle is provided. See the road-test vehicle requirements guide.
The written knowledge test kiosk offers Spanish at the point of selection, no advance notice needed. The road skills test is English-only with no exceptions for standard applicants. If you passed the written test in Spanish, you still take the road test entirely in English.
Language support differs significantly between the knowledge exam and the skills test.
In Fort Smith, an applicant failed before leaving the parking lot. They did not understand the examiner's command to "turn on your left turn signal." The examiner marked it as failure to follow instructions. Language fails waste everyone's time, learn the basics first.
During the Arkansas road skills test, the ASP examiner gives all instructions in English only and will not repeat or rephrase them. If you cannot understand a direction, pull over safely and wait for clarification, but do not ask for a translation. Pre-approved ADA accommodations are the only formal exception. Clear understanding is critical for safety. The examiner communicates only in English throughout your test.
In Springdale, a test was stopped immediately when the applicant turned right after the examiner said "left at the light." The action was considered a dangerous error. The applicant had to wait 30 days to retest.
If your parents don't speak English, the permit process has separate accommodations for parental consent paperwork.
Keep this page focused on language. The current ASP skills-test checklist centers on the original instruction permit, a valid licensed driver, current proof of insurance, and current vehicle registration. Applicants using immigration documents should bring those documents on each visit.
ASP-33 and a DL-22 practice log are not universal items on the current skills-test checklist. Use the dedicated Arkansas road-test documents guide for the full current checklist.
Disability-related testing support is separate from ordinary language preference. See the Arkansas disability accommodations guide for the current ASP accommodation process.
Learn the English commands examiners use: "Turn left," "Turn right," "Pull over," "Merge," "Stop." Practice with a bilingual supervisor during practice hours. No interpreter is permitted during the test itself.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
