Alaska Permit Practice Hours: 40 Hours Required and What the DMV Checks

Alaska's supervised driving requirements for teens are tied to approved driver-education programs and the parent-certification process.

Required Practice Hours for an Alaska Driver's Permit

Alaska's supervised driving requirements for teens are tied to approved driver-education programs and the parent-certification process. The 40-hour log is the standard applied by most programs and is certified by parents on Form 433.

Hour Requirements and Verification

The 40-hour supervised practice requirement is the standard applied before applying for a Provisional License. You must hold your instruction permit for at least 6 months before applying for a provisional license.

• Supervised Driving: All 40 hours must be with a licensed driver aged 21 or older who has at least one year of driving experience.
• Professional Instruction: Hours with a certified driving instructor count toward the total. There is no separate requirement for professional lessons.
• What Counts: Any driving time on public roads under supervision counts. Practice should include parking, highway merging, and city driving.
• What Doesn't Count: Driving on private property, time spent as a passenger, or any unsupervised driving does not apply to the learners permit driving hours requirement.

Verification Requirement: You do not submit a physical logbook. Your parent or guardian certifies the completed hours by signing Form D1 and Form 433. Accurate logging protects you from disputes during your road test.

How to Log Driving Hours in Alaska

While Alaska DMV Division does not provide an official logbook, you must keep a detailed record to certify accurately. Failing to track properly is a common reason for road test delays in Fairbanks and Anchorage.

See the Alaska learner's permit guide for complete requirements.

• Use a Driving App: Apps like RoadReady use GPS to auto-log trips, categorize night/weather hours, and generate reports. This prevents disputes over totals.
• Use a Paper Log: Create a sheet noting date, start/end times, conditions (dry, night, snow), skills practiced, and supervisor initials.

Common Logging Issues:

1. Vague 'Challenging' Hours: Logging '1 hour at night' is insufficient. Note the specific road (e.g., 'Glenn Highway in snowfall') and skill (e.g., 'braking on ice'). An examiner in Wasilla may ask for details and fail you if your experience seems fabricated.
2. Missing Supervisor Details: Every entry must have the supervising driver's printed name and signature/initials. A parent signing Form D1 for hours driven with an uncertified 19-year-old sibling constitutes perjury and leads to license revocation.
3. Inconsistent Time Math: Manually adding paper log times often leads to errors. A DMV clerk in Juneau will reject an application if the parent-certified total on Form D1 is 40 hours, but your attached log sheets only sum to 38. Double-check your addition before your appointment.

Alaska DMV Division Process and Tips

Submitting Your Hours and Taking the Test

After meeting the instruction permit practice hours requirement, schedule your road test. Bring these items to the DMV:

• Completed Form D1.
• Completed Form 433 (Parental Consent).
• Your instruction permit (held for 6+ months with no violations).
• Payment for the road test ($15) and license fee ($20).

Real Talk: Book your road test appointment online for the earliest morning slot to avoid multi-hour walk-in waits at the Anchorage DMV, especially before winter holidays.

Save Yourself Time: Before your test, check your vehicle's registration, insurance, and that all lights (brake, signal, headlights) work. Examiners at the Fairbanks office will cancel your test on the spot for a burnt-out brake light, forcing a reschedule.

Provisional License Rules for Drivers Under 18

Upon passing the road test, you receive a provisional license with these restrictions until age 18:

• Passenger Limit: No passengers under 21 except siblings - for the entire provisional period.
• Curfew: No driving between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM. Exceptions apply for work or with a licensed parent/guardian.
