Alaska Permit Test Retakes: In-Person and Online Wait Times, Attempts, and Fees

If you fail the Alaska permit knowledge test, the retake rule depends on how you tested. In-person DMV testing is limited to once per day and is free. KnowToDrive online retakes can happen the same day, cost $11.50 per attempt, and have a five-attempt online limit.

In-Person vs. Online Retake Timing

Alaska uses different retake timing for in-person and online knowledge tests.

Can I retake the Alaska permit test the same day after failing?

Online, yes. KnowToDrive allows up to four additional same-day attempts after a failure or disqualification. In person, no. Alaska DMV limits the written test to once per day, so a failed in-person test can be retaken the following day.

Retake Fees and Attempt Limits

The $15 instruction permit fee is the credential fee; it is not a package that covers knowledge-test attempts.

• In-person knowledge test: Free at a local Alaska DMV.
• KnowToDrive online test: $11.50 for each attempt.
• Online attempt limit: A failure or disqualification counts toward the five-attempt online limit. After five, the online option is blocked for one year, but in-person DMV testing remains available.

How much does an Alaska permit-test retake cost?

An in-person retake at a local Alaska DMV is free. If you use KnowToDrive online, each new attempt costs $11.50.

What happens if I fail the Alaska online permit test five times?

You cannot use the online test again for one year. You may still go to a local Alaska DMV and take the knowledge test in person.

Does being disqualified from KnowToDrive count as an attempt?

Yes. KnowToDrive counts both failed and disqualified attempts toward the five-attempt online limit.

How to Prepare Before Your Next Attempt

Use the time before your next attempt to fix the topics that caused the failure rather than repeating the same study routine.

• Review weak topics: Go back to the Alaska Driver Manual for the rules you missed.
• Use targeted practice: Focus on the same rule categories until you can explain why each answer is correct.
• If reading is the barrier: If you understand English but cannot read or have difficulty reading, Alaska allows you to bring someone who can read the questions aloud. You must answer independently.

Does failing the Alaska permit test cancel my permit application?

No. A failed test means the knowledge-test requirement is still incomplete. You can retest under the applicable in-person or online retake rules and continue the permit process after you pass.

After Multiple Failed Attempts

Repeated failures do not create a separate Alaska DMV three-attempt ban for normal in-person knowledge testing. The main special limit applies to KnowToDrive online testing.

• Change your study method: Review the manual and use practice questions to target weak areas instead of repeatedly retaking without preparation.
• Online testing: Five failures or disqualifications trigger a one-year online lockout.
• In-person option: The online lockout does not prevent you from taking the test at a local Alaska DMV.

Can I switch from the online Alaska permit test to an in-person test after failing?

Yes. In-person DMV testing remains available. That includes applicants who have reached KnowToDrive's five-attempt online limit.

Can You Challenge a Failed Test Result?

A normal failed score is not something you can overturn because you disagree with an answer. If you believe a technical problem affected the test, report it immediately to the testing staff or follow the online provider's instructions for a failed or disqualified session.

For an online disqualification, KnowToDrive treats the disqualification as an attempt and explains the next retake steps in the test-result email.

Preparing for a Retest

Alaska DMV does not publish a separate statewide document checklist just because you are retaking the knowledge test. The retake itself is about completing the knowledge-test requirement.

If you are also completing the instruction-permit transaction after you pass, bring the documents required for that permit application. Those requirements belong to the main Alaska permit documents process rather than a special retest-only list.

How to Avoid Retest Delays

• For in-person testing, check your office before going. Knowledge-test cutoffs and office hours vary by location.
• For online testing, test your device, webcam, lighting and internet first. KnowToDrive can disqualify a session when its monitoring requirements are not met.
• Do not rush a retake. If you are repeatedly missing the same topic, review that section of the Alaska Driver Manual before paying for another online attempt.
