Your supervising driver must be at least 21 years old, hold a current valid driver's license, have at least one year of driving experience for the type or class of vehicle you are practicing in, and sit beside you in the front passenger seat.
A qualified supervising driver can accompany you while you practice. Supervising the drive is not the same as signing parental consent. The person who authorizes issuance for a minor under Form 433 has a separate consent and financial-responsibility role.
A supervisor must meet all four rules simultaneously.
The supervisor must hold a current valid license and should have it available to show that they meet the supervision requirement if asked. When that person is driving, Alaska separately requires the driver's license to be carried and shown on demand.
Your relationship to the supervisor matters for paperwork, but not for the basic legal requirement to drive with you.
| Person | Can supervise if otherwise qualified? | Can sign Form 433? |
|---|---|---|
| Parent or legal guardian | Yes, if 21+ with the required license and experience | Yes, when the person is authorized under Alaska's parental-consent rules |
| Spouse, sibling, or friend | Yes, if 21+ with the required license and experience | Not automatically; only if the person separately qualifies under an authorized consent category |
| Certified driving instructor | Yes, if the instructor meets the supervision requirements | Not automatically just because the person is an instructor |
| Out-of-state licensed adult | Yes, if 21+ and otherwise meets Alaska's supervision requirements | Out-of-state license status alone does not decide consent authority; a qualifying parent or guardian may still be authorized to sign |
Role distinction: The supervising driver, the Form 433 consent signer, and the person who assumes financial responsibility for a minor can be different roles. Form 433 ties financial responsibility to the person who authorizes issuance; it does not automatically make every supervising driver financially responsible for the learner.
No. The person who signs Form 433 must be authorized to give consent for the minor. The person supervising a practice drive only needs to meet Alaska's supervisor qualifications. One person may fill both roles, but it is not required.
The supervisor must remain qualified and capable of supervising throughout the practice drive.
For Alaska permit process details, see the Alaska permit guide.
If the supervisor's license is expired, suspended, or revoked, or the supervisor is not seated beside the learner, the learner should not continue driving until a qualified supervisor is in place. Alaska allows compliant remote online notarization, but applicants should make sure any notarized Form 433 satisfies Alaska requirements rather than assuming every online-notary service will be accepted.
Drivers under 18 have additional requirements when moving from an instruction permit to a provisional license.
Yes, if the adult is at least 21, holds a current valid license, has at least one year of the required driving experience for that vehicle type or class, and sits beside the learner. Whether that person may sign Form 433 is a separate consent question.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
