Alabama Learner's Permit Test Format: Questions, Sections, and Test-Day Process

The Alabama learner's permit test has exactly 30 multiple-choice questions drawn randomly from the Alabama Driver Manual. Questions fall into two main categories: road signs (roughly 8-12 questions) and rules of the road (roughly 18-22 questions). The test is computer-based and ends automatically once the result is determined.

How many questions are on the Alabama permit test and what do they cover?

Thirty questions, all multiple-choice. No true/false. Questions are randomly pulled from a larger pool, every test is unique, but the count is always 30.

• Road signs: Identify regulatory, warning, and guide signs by shape, color, and symbol.
• Rules of the road: Right-of-way laws, speed limits, parking regulations, and safe driving behaviors.
• Scoring: The test stops the moment you hit 24 correct (pass) or 7 incorrect (automatic fail, passing becomes mathematically impossible).

• Study the Alabama Driver Manual, not generic national study apps.
• GDL curfew rules, implied consent, and school bus laws are Alabama-specific topics that appear on the test and are not covered accurately by most third-party apps.

Are all Alabama permit test questions multiple choice?

Yes for the standard Class D learner test. The 30 questions are multiple choice; other license classes use separate exams with their own formats.

Are the same 30 questions given to every Alabama permit applicant?

No. Questions are drawn from a larger pool, so two applicants may see different questions. Study the rules and signs in the Alabama Driver Manual instead of memorizing one practice set.

Does the Alabama permit test stop once I get 24 questions correct?

Yes. Once you reach 24 correct answers, you have met the 80% passing requirement and the result is determined.

Does the Alabama permit test stop after 7 wrong answers?

Yes. With 7 incorrect answers, reaching 24 correct out of 30 is no longer possible, so the result is a fail.

How are road signs and driving rules mixed on the Alabama permit test?

The exact split can vary. This format guide does not assign a fixed road-sign question count; use the dedicated Road Sign Questions guide for sign-specific test coverage and practice.

How long does the Alabama permit test take?

The Class D knowledge test does not use a per-question countdown. Most applicants finish within a normal office visit, but detailed timing, break rules, inactivity questions, and location-specific testing cutoffs belong in the test-time guidance and the specific ALEA office schedule.

Documents and fees are separate from test format. Use the dedicated Required Documents and Permit Cost & Fees guides for the current application checklist and charges.
