Alabama GDL Practice Hours: 50-Hour Log, Night Driving Recommended, and How ALEA Audits Your DL-31

Teens under 18 must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (night driving practice is strongly recommended for skills development, but is not a codified separate minimum in official ALEA sources), before qualifying for an Alabama Stage II license. Adults 18 and older have no practice hour requirement.

The 50-hour log is waived if you complete an ALEA-approved driver education course.

How many practice hours does Alabama require for a learner's permit?

For drivers under 18, 50 total supervised hours, 10 of which must be at night. All hours must be logged with a licensed adult aged 21 or older in the front seat. Completing an ALEA-approved driver's ed course waives the 50-hour log entirely.

• Hours from an ALEA-approved driver's education course count toward your total.
• Driving without a supervising adult in the front seat does not count, and those miles put your permit clock at risk of a 6-month reset.
• Download the Alabama Driver Manual for exam content and GDL structure details.
• Book your road test at ALEA's road skills testing page as early as possible, slots at Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile fill 60-90 days out.

Do I need to log my driving hours in Alabama, and does ALEA actually check?

Yes, if you are under 18, and yes, ALEA does check. Examiners primarily collect the signed Form DL-31, but they can and do request your detailed daily log for an audit.

Full Alabama permit rules are at the Alabama learner's permit guide.

• Your daily log: Track date, start time, duration, and driving conditions for every session. Use an app or a printable sheet, not memory.
• Official Form DL-31: The one-page certification form a parent or guardian signs. Submitted at your road test. Must show total hours and the required 10 night-driving hours clearly checked.

An examiner in Mobile rejected a teen's DL-31 because the handwritten daily log showed implausible entries, 8 hours of driving on a school day. The form was signed, but the underlying log raised flags. A log that doesn't survive basic scrutiny gets rejected. Log only accurate, date-consistent entries.

Failing for a round-number log is more common than most applicants realize. In Huntsville, an applicant submitted a log showing exactly 1 hour every single day for 50 consecutive days. The examiner required a notarized affidavit from the parent explaining the pattern, a 3-week delay for what should have been a routine check-in. Vary your session lengths. Logs that look machine-generated don't survive audits.

Alabama DL-31 Mistakes That Trigger Rejections and Delays

Three logging errors cause the most rejections at ALEA offices statewide.

• Incomplete DL-31 form: The DL-31 form requires a verified total hours count and the signature of a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian. Complete all fields and obtain the signature before your road test appointment.
• Parent can't attend road test: If your parent cannot appear at the exam, the DL-31 must be notarized before submission. An un-notarized DL-31 is an automatic rejection at the counter, no exceptions.
• Permit holding period mismatch: Your practice hours must be spread across the mandatory 6-month holding period. A log showing 50 hours in the final 2 weeks raises an immediate audit flag. Spread sessions across the full 6 months.

Alabama permit practice tips: Road test booking, vehicle checks, and DL-31 readiness

• Book your road test appointment the first day you're eligible. Walk-ins at Montgomery East Boulevard face 4+ hour waits. Use ALEA's online road test scheduler and check at midnight when new slots are typically released. See ALEA's STAR ID page for what your license will show after the road test.
• Clip your completed DL-31 to the top of your document stack. Showing the examiner an organized packet with the log form on top signals preparation and speeds up check-in.
• Test your vehicle in the parking lot before going inside. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, a failed equipment check is an immediate cancellation in Tuscaloosa. No rescheduling grace period. Check everything before entering the building. Full permit guide at shoro.ai Alabama learner's permit.
