Alabama Learner's Permit Transfer Out of State: What Transfers and What Doesn't

An Alabama learner's permit does not directly transfer to another state. When you establish residency elsewhere (typically within 30-90 days), your Alabama permit is no longer valid for driving there, you must surrender it and apply for a new permit in your new state.

Your logged practice hours and waiting period time may be credited, but only with proper documentation gathered before you leave Alabama.

Can I transfer my Alabama learner's permit to another state?

No. Learner's permits are provisional credentials and do not fall under the same reciprocity agreements as full driver's licenses. Moving to another state requires surrendering your Alabama permit and applying for a new one in your new state, including retaking the written knowledge test and vision screening.

Do I have to surrender my Alabama learner's permit when I move?

Follow the new state's licensing process when you establish residency. Do not assume you can keep using the Alabama learner credential after the new state issues or requires its own permit; the new state controls surrender or invalidation of the old credential.

Can I keep driving on my Alabama permit after becoming a resident of another state?

Do not assume so. Visitor rules and resident licensing rules are different. Once you establish residency, check the new state's deadline and learner-license requirements and apply there as required.

Is my Alabama learner's permit valid when visiting other states?

Generally yes, for visiting purposes only. You must follow both Alabama's driving restrictions and the host state's laws, applying whichever is stricter.

See the Alabama learner's permit guide for complete requirements.

• Supervision: Alabama requires a 21+ licensed supervisor. If the visiting state requires 25+, follow that rule.
• Curfew: Obey the earlier curfew if the visiting state has one.
• States that may not accept out-of-state permits: Hawaii. South Carolina and Vermont also have restrictions. Pennsylvania's DMV guidance suggests confirming with each state's DOT. Always verify before driving on your Alabama permit in another state.
• New York City: Learner's permit holders from any state are prohibited from driving within city limits.
• Neighboring states (Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida): Generally accept Alabama permits for visits but require a new application upon establishing residency.

ALEA Records to Get Before Leaving Alabama

Gather these documents before your move, many new states will honor your Alabama history only if you can prove it with official paperwork.

• Official Driving Record (MVR): Request using Form MV-DPPA1 at an ALEA office. Fee: $5.75. Proves your permit issue date and good standing. Visit on a Wednesday morning to avoid Monday and Saturday lines at the Montgomery or Huntsville offices.
• Certified Form DL-31: Have a parent sign and get it stamped at the ALEA office, certifying 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice. Download Form DL-31 from ALEA's forms page before your visit.
• Your physical permit card: You will surrender it at your new state's DMV.

Can I get credit for Alabama practice hours and waiting period in a new state?

Many states will honor your Alabama history, but only if you can document it. Call your new state's DMV before your appointment to confirm they accept out-of-state driving logs.

• A teen moving from Huntsville to Tampa had 4 months of Alabama permit holding credited by the Florida DHSMV after presenting her official MVR.
• She only had to wait 2 more months before the Florida road test.
• States often requiring full retesting regardless of Alabama history: New Jersey, New York, California.
• States more likely to credit Alabama history: most southeastern states including Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Common mistakes when moving states with an Alabama learner's permit

• Waiting too long to establish residency: A family moving from Birmingham to Atlanta waited 60 days and found themselves fined for driving with an invalid Alabama permit. Georgia's residency rule had already triggered. Know your new state's grace period before you move.
• Bringing copies instead of originals: Photocopied birth certificates and Social Security cards are rejected at DMVs nationwide. Originals only.
• Assuming driver's ed transfers automatically: A course certificate may not satisfy the new state's specific education requirement. Verify before assuming the waiver applies.

Schedule your new state's DMV appointment for the first Tuesday afternoon of the month, this avoids the rush of applicants who wait until the end of their grace period, reducing your wait time from 3+ hours to about 45 minutes. Full Alabama permit process at shoro.ai Alabama learner's permit guide.
