You need four document categories to get an Alabama learner's permit: proof of identity, Social Security verification, two proofs of Alabama residency, and school enrollment proof if under 19. The total fee is $41.25. Missing one document means immediate rejection, you leave, reschedule, and start the queue again.
Bring this complete set of originals to the ALEA office. Photocopies of any item trigger rejection at intake, no exceptions. See the ALEA document requirements page and download the Alabama Driver Manual PDF for written test prep before your visit.
| Document Category | What to Bring |
|---|---|
| Proof of Identity | Age 15 U.S.-born applicants: certified U.S. Birth Certificate. Age 16+: use ALEA's broader primary/secondary identification rules, with at least one primary document. |
| Social Security Verification | Original Social Security Card, W-2, DD-214, or Medicare/Medicaid ID card (if SSN ends in "A"). SSA-1099 is not on ALEA's accepted list. |
| Proof of Residency (2 required) | Utility bill, lease, bank statement, etc. No cell phone bills. No P.O. Boxes. |
| School Enrollment (if under 19) | Form DL-193 signed by principal within 30 days. |
| Parent/Legal Guardian | Must accompany applicant under 18 with their own valid photo ID. |
| Payment | $5 test fee + $36.25 license fee, paid separately. ALEA accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. No personal checks. |
| First-Time Applicant | Identity / Document Rule |
|---|---|
| Age 15 | For a U.S.-born learner-license applicant, bring the certified U.S. Birth Certificate required by ALEA, plus the Social Security card, school-enrollment proof if applicable, residency proofs, and the parent/legal-guardian documents required for a minor. |
| Age 16+ | ALEA uses its broader identification rule: two forms of identification with at least one photo ID and one primary document, or three non-photo IDs with one primary document, plus the Social Security card, school-enrollment proof if under 19 and applying for the first time, and residency proofs. |
Bring originals or certified copies where ALEA allows them. Ordinary photocopies are not accepted for the key identity documents used for first issuance.
The adult should bring valid photo identification. A non-parent guardian should also bring the certified court document that proves legal guardianship or custody authority for the required signature.
For a U.S.-born age-15 learner-license applicant, Alabama requires a certified U.S. Birth Certificate issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Hospital-issued keepsake certificates, the kind with footprints, are rejected statewide, every time.
One Montgomery applicant pulled a hospital keepsake birth certificate from the family memory box. The clerk rejected it immediately. Alabama Vital Records certified copy required, available within 5 days from the Department of Public Health. Born in Alabama: order a certified copy from the Alabama Department of Public Health for $15.00. Born elsewhere: contact that state's vital records office.
Name mismatch: If your name differs due to marriage or adoption, bring the legal name change document, certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Update your Social Security card first, since ALEA verifies against the SSA database. At the Huntsville office, Devon's hyphenated surname on his birth certificate didn't match the truncated version on his SS card. Flagged at intake. SSA correction takes about three weeks, and rebooking only opens after it arrives.
It depends on age. For a U.S.-born applicant age 15, ALEA specifically lists a certified U.S. birth certificate. For applicants age 16 or older, an unexpired U.S. passport is on the primary-document list.
Bring the certified legal document that explains the name change, such as a marriage certificate, adoption record, divorce decree, or court order. Update the Social Security record first when needed so ALEA can match the identity information.
Two documents required, both must show your name and physical Alabama address. P.O. Boxes and cell phone bills fail every time.
Living with a relative: Use the 'Parent Trace' method, two residency documents in the relative's name (power bill and mortgage) plus a certified birth certificate linking you to a parent. If a grandparent or aunt/uncle is the guardian without legal paperwork, a notarized affidavit of residence from the relative plus a court-issued guardianship document is required.
For STAR ID, ALEA allows qualifying address documents in a parent's name when the applicant also provides a birth certificate that links the applicant to that parent. The exact residency set still has to meet ALEA's principal-residence rules.
A current school photo ID appears on ALEA's secondary-identification list, so it can help as a secondary ID for applicants using that document path. It is not, by itself, one of the two proofs of principal residence. See ALEA's document list.
Under 18 requires a parent or legal guardian signature, in person at the ALEA office, on the digital pad. No remote signatures, no exceptions for minor absences.
These five document mistakes cancel Alabama ALEA permit applications at the counter on the day of the appointment. Each results in a lost appointment slot and a rescheduling delay of 7-21 days.
See the ALEA Graduated Driver License page for complete document policies.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
