For STAR ID, ALEA allows qualifying address documents in a parent's name when the applicant also provides a birth certificate that links the applicant to that parent. The exact residency set still has to meet ALEA's principal-residence rules.

Can I use a school ID as proof of identity or Alabama residency?

A current school photo ID appears on ALEA's secondary-identification list, so it can help as a secondary ID for applicants using that document path. It is not, by itself, one of the two proofs of principal residence. See ALEA's document list.

Alabama parental signature rules: Who can sign, divorced parents, and notarized consent

Under 18 requires a parent or legal guardian signature, in person at the ALEA office, on the digital pad. No remote signatures, no exceptions for minor absences.

Who can sign: Custodial parent or legal guardian with a certified court order.
Divorced parents: The parent with legal custody signs. For joint custody, one parent with custodial rights suffices, that parent must be present with their own valid ID. A Montgomery teen's appointment was canceled because his non-custodial father accompanied him; his mother, who held custody, had to reschedule and appear.
Married minors: Do not need a parent's signature, bring your marriage certificate.
Emancipated minors: Bring a certified Court Order of Emancipation.
Absent parent: Sign a specific Affidavit of Consent before a Notary Public. Electronic signatures not accepted. Bring the notarized document to ALEA. Notary fees: $5-$15 at banks, UPS stores, or law offices.

Alabama ALEA document mistakes that cancel appointments on the spot

These five document mistakes cancel Alabama ALEA permit applications at the counter on the day of the appointment. Each results in a lost appointment slot and a rescheduling delay of 7-21 days.

Laminated Social Security card: Not accepted. Alabama's ALEA clerks are trained to spot laminate on sight. A Birmingham mother sealed her son's card "for safekeeping", rejected immediately. SSA replacement card required; rebook 11 days out.
Photocopied any document: Photocopies of birth certificates, Social Security cards, or residency proofs are rejected across all ALEA offices. Original and certified documents only.
DL-193 signed by wrong person: A student in Mobile passed the vision test but was sent home because his DL-193 was signed by a teacher, not the principal. The form must bear the principal or designated administrator's signature.
DL-193 older than 30 days: Ensure the school administrator's signature was dated within 30 days of your ALEA visit. A form signed 31 days ago fails.
Wearing glasses without them: Wear your prescription glasses or contacts to the office. Forgetting them means a failed vision screening and a rescheduled visit. There is no same-day fix at the counter.

See the ALEA Graduated Driver License page for complete document policies.

Alabama Learner's Permit Application Forms: DL-193, Digital Process, and How to Fix Errors

There is no single paper form for the initial Alabama learner's permit application. ALEA uses a digital-first process completed on-screen at the office or via the Online Pre-Apply portal. You bring paper support documents, not a paper application. One critical paper form: the DL-193 School Enrollment Form for applicants under 19.
