Alabama Learner's Permit Driving Rules: Supervision, Night Driving, Highways, and Passengers

Driving alone with an Alabama learner's permit is illegal. A qualified supervisor must be beside the learner whenever the vehicle is being driven. For the ordinary licensed-driver supervisor route, the driver must be at least 21 and sit in the front passenger seat. A parent or legal guardian and a licensed or certified driving instructor are covered by separate Stage I supervisor rules.

Stage I focuses on supervised driving. Stage II has separate curfew, passenger, and handheld-device restrictions, so the two stages should not be treated as the same set of rules.

Can I drive alone with an Alabama learner's permit?

No. A Stage I learner must have a legally qualified supervisor beside them while driving. A short trip to school, work, a store, or another nearby destination does not create an exception.

• Ordinary licensed-driver supervisor: At least 21 years old, validly licensed, and seated beside the learner.
• Other qualifying routes: A parent or legal guardian, or a licensed or certified driving instructor, may qualify under Alabama's Stage I rules.

Can I drive to school or work alone with an Alabama learner's permit?

No. The destination does not remove the Stage I supervision requirement. School and work exceptions that apply to some Stage II restrictions do not turn a Stage I permit into a solo-driving credential.

Driving Privileges Granted by an Alabama Learner's Permit

With an Alabama Stage I learner's permit, you may practice on public roadways, including interstates, when a qualified supervisor is beside you. Before each drive, make sure the supervisor still meets Alabama's age, license, and seating rules.

Can I drive on the interstate with an Alabama learner's permit?

Yes. Alabama does not create a separate Stage I ban on interstate driving. The same supervision rule still applies, so a qualified supervisor must be beside you.

Alabama learner's permit driving restrictions: Freeways, night, passengers, and parking lots

Stage I restrictions are built around supervision. They are different from the curfew and passenger rules that apply to a Stage II restricted license.

• Night driving: Allowed with a qualified supervisor. Alabama does not require a separate 10-hour night-driving minimum within the 50-hour practice requirement.
• Freeways and highways: Allowed with a qualified supervisor.
• Passengers: Stage I does not have the same one-non-family-passenger restriction that applies to Stage II. Seat-belt and vehicle-capacity laws still apply.
• Parking lots and driveways: Keep the qualified supervisor beside you whenever you are using the learner's permit to practice driving.

Can I drive at night with an Alabama learner's permit?

Yes, if a qualified supervisor is beside you. The Stage II midnight-to-6 a.m. restriction is a separate rule and should not be applied to Stage I as a stand-alone curfew.

Is there a passenger limit with an Alabama learner's permit?

Stage I does not use the same GDL passenger cap as Stage II. The learner still must be properly supervised, and everyone in the vehicle must follow applicable seat-belt and vehicle-capacity laws.

Are Alabama Stage I and Stage II driving restrictions the same?

No. Stage I is the supervised learner stage. Stage II allows more independent driving but adds its own curfew, passenger, and handheld-device restrictions.

Consequences of Breaking Alabama Learner's Permit Restrictions

Driving without the required supervision violates the conditions of the learner's permit and can lead to a citation or action against the permit. The exact consequence depends on the violation and the driver's record.

End of Alabama Stage I Permit Restrictions

Stage I restrictions continue until the driver qualifies for and receives the next license stage. The age, waiting-period, practice or driver-education, and road-test checklist belongs in the dedicated Next Steps After Permit guide.
