Your vehicle for the Ontario G2 or G road test must have working seatbelts, functioning brake lights, turn signals, horn, and mirrors, plus valid registration and proof of insurance.
Your vehicle must meet DriveTest's minimum requirements before the road test begins. If the vehicle or required documentation prevents the test from starting, the appointment can be declared out-of-order rather than recorded as a failed driving test.
Use a properly licensed and insured vehicle and have the required proof available for the appointment. Keep the detailed document checklist on the dedicated road-test documents page; this article focuses on whether the vehicle itself can be used for the test.
Think of the pre-test vehicle check in three groups:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Allowed | A safe, road-legal passenger vehicle that meets the required equipment and documentation rules, including a borrowed vehicle when you have permission to use it. |
| Can make the test out-of-order | Required lights, signals, horn, seatbelts or other minimum safety items not working, or another condition that prevents DriveTest from starting the test. |
| Cannot be used during the test | Electronic driving aids such as automatic parking, lane-monitoring/assist, cruise control and backup-camera assistance where MTO rules prohibit their use during the road test. |
You may use a parent's, family member's or other permitted vehicle if it is properly licensed, insured and meets the road-test requirements. A G1 driver still cannot drive to the test alone and must follow the normal accompanying-driver rules before the test begins.
Detailed proof-of-insurance and document requirements belong on the road-test documents page.
Yes, if you are authorized to use the rental vehicle and it meets the normal licensing, insurance and vehicle-condition requirements for the test.
Yes. A driving-school vehicle can be used if it meets DriveTest requirements. Using a school car is optional, not a road-test requirement.
Electronic driving aids may be installed in the vehicle, but MTO road-test rules do not allow you to use features such as automatic parking, lane-monitoring/assist, cruise control or backup-camera assistance during the test. Complete the required observations and manoeuvres yourself.
Dashcams, phones and action cameras being used as recording devices must be disabled. If a built-in device cannot be disabled, confirm that it is not recording the passenger compartment or the examiner.
Rental vehicles may be used when you are authorized to drive them and the vehicle meets the normal road-test requirements.
A dashcam or other recording device may be installed, but it must not record the road test in a prohibited way. DriveTest says recording devices being used must be disabled; if a built-in device cannot be disabled, it must not record the passenger compartment or examiner.
No. A backup camera may be installed in the vehicle, but you must complete the required observations and manoeuvres without using the camera as a driving aid during the test.
If the vehicle does not meet DriveTest's minimum requirements and the test cannot begin, the appointment is declared out-of-order. This is different from failing the driving portion of the road test.
For a normal vehicle-related out-of-order test, DriveTest keeps 50% of the prepaid road-test fee and the remaining 50% stays as credit.
If a vehicle problem makes the road test out-of-order before it starts, DriveTest normally keeps 50% of the prepaid road-test fee and leaves the other 50% as credit. See the DriveTest vehicle requirements.
Check the required lights, signals, horn, seatbelts, tires and other basic safety items before leaving for the appointment. Fix any known problem before test day rather than relying on the examiner to decide whether the test can proceed.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."

"The readiness score gives you so much confidence. I knew exactly when I was ready to take the test. Highly recommend Shoro for anyone nervous about their exam."
