What if the photo on your Ontario G1 licence is wrong or unusable?

If the photo needs to be replaced or does not meet Ontario's photo standards, visit ServiceOntario. You may be asked to have a new photo taken and provide your current licence plus accepted identification.

What if the signature on your Ontario driver's licence is wrong?

A driver's licence must carry an acceptable signature. If the signature is wrong or rejected, ServiceOntario can tell you what correction is needed before the replacement card is issued.

Correction Process and Timeline

Personal-information corrections are handled in person at ServiceOntario.

Gather documents: Bring your current driver's licence and the original supporting documents required for the correction.
Visit ServiceOntario: Submit the correction request in person.
Cost: Ontario lists personal-information corrections at $0. The $35.75 fee applies to replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged licence, not to a normal personal-information correction.

Your corrected licence is mailed after processing. A temporary driver licence or confirmation is issued at the ServiceOntario centre.

Do you need a new photo when correcting information on your G1? Not for every information correction. A new photo is needed when the photo itself must be updated or when ServiceOntario requires a new one for the replacement transaction.

Using Your Permit and Legal Risks While Waiting

Can you still use incorrect permit while waiting for correction? You can use the temporary document issued at ServiceOntario along with your old, incorrect card. However, driving with a permanently incorrect permit is risky.

You must report an address change within 6 days. For other errors, while no specific deadline exists, driving with mismatched details can lead police to suspect an invalid licence, potentially resulting in fines up to $400.

Example: A driver in Mississauga was stopped for a routine check.
The officer noticed the address on his G1 didn't match the insurance slip.
Although he had applied for a correction, he hadn't received his temporary document yet.
This caused a 30-minute delay while the officer verified his identity.

Ontario G1 correction tips: how to fix licence errors without losing weeks

Act as soon as you spot an error. Bring the original documents that prove the correct data (passport, birth certificate). Do not wait and assume it will be corrected on the next renewal.

Verify your application form twice before submitting to avoid the $35.75 replacement fee for applicant error.
Book a morning appointment online to avoid afternoon crowds and ensure staff have time to review your case thoroughly.
Bring two original proof documents in case one is questioned, preventing an immediate rejection and rescheduling.
