Language Options for the Written and Road Tests

Ontario uses different language rules for the knowledge test and the road test.

Can you take an Ontario G2 or G road test in French?

Yes. Ontario road-test services are available in English or French.

Interpreter Rules and Sign-Language Accommodations

For a standard road test, an ordinary interpreter or family member does not ride in the vehicle. A verified exception exists for a sign-language interpreter arranged as an accessibility accommodation for a deaf, deafened or hard-of-hearing applicant.

Road-test services are offered in English and French; French is not limited only to a few designated bilingual regions. If you need an accessibility accommodation, arrange it with DriveTest in advance.

For the G1 knowledge test, detailed language and interpreter rules belong in the Test Language Options guide.

Can you use an interpreter during an Ontario road test?

An ordinary interpreter or family member does not ride in the vehicle during a standard road test. Accessibility accommodations are handled separately.

Can a deaf driver use a sign-language interpreter during the road test?

Yes, a sign-language interpreter can be arranged as an approved accessibility accommodation for a deaf, deafened or hard-of-hearing applicant.

Can a translator or instructor help during road-test check-in or the debrief?

Language help may be used for permitted check-in or post-test communication, but that does not allow an ordinary translator or instructor to ride in the vehicle during the test.

How Examiners Communicate During the Road Test

Examiners use a standardized set of commands from the DriveTest Examiners' Directive. You do not need to be fluent, but you must recognize and respond to essential commands.

Complete Ontario permit details are on the Ontario permit guide.

See the Ontario learner's permit guide for complete requirements.

Examiners cannot engage in conversation, but you may ask for clarification before a maneuver. Use phrases like -"Please repeat-" or -"Left turn, correct?-"

Practice the exact command 'Pull over to the curb' with an instructor. In Brampton, a common mistake is stopping in a bus lane instead of a legal parking spot, causing an automatic fail.

Can the examiner use hand signals during an Ontario road test?

Yes. Examiners can use standard hand signals and simple driving directions as part of normal test communication. You still need to understand and respond safely to the examiner.

Common Scenarios and How to Prepare

Practise common examiner directions in the language you will use for the road test. A family member or translator may help with permitted check-in or post-test communication, but an ordinary interpreter does not ride in the vehicle during the test.

If you are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing, ask DriveTest in advance about the sign-language interpreter accommodation.

Use the official Ontario Driver's Handbook and practise the standard driving terms and hand signals you may need on test day.
