A traffic stop does not automatically invalidate a learner's Class 7L because the supervisor receives a ticket. The key question is whether the supervisor still meets the legal requirements to supervise.
The outcome depends on what happens to the supervisor during the stop.
| Situation | Effect on the Learner |
|---|---|
| Supervisor gets an ordinary traffic ticket but remains qualified | The learner's Class 7L does not become invalid just because the supervisor was ticketed. |
| Supervisor's licence is suspended, prohibited, expired, or otherwise no longer qualifies | The learner must stop driving until a qualified supervisor is present. |
| Supervisor becomes impaired, arrested, or otherwise unable to supervise | The learner must stop driving and arrange for a qualified driver or other safe transportation. |
For the full supervisor-age, licence-class, seating, and sobriety rules, use the Supervising Driver guide.
The supervisor can no longer act as the qualified supervisor. The learner must stop driving until another qualified supervisor is present or another legal transportation arrangement is made.
Can another qualified passenger take over as the supervisor after a traffic stop?
Yes, if that passenger independently meets all Class 7L supervisor requirements and can legally supervise the learner from the required seating position.
An ordinary citation does not end the driving session if the supervisor remains legally qualified. The session must stop when the supervisor no longer satisfies the supervision requirement or cannot safely supervise.
The learner must hold a valid Class 7L and drive only with a qualified supervisor. The supervisor must remain legally qualified and able to supervise throughout the drive. See the dedicated supervising-driver article for the full eligibility rules.
Stop safely as soon as practical and do not continue until a qualified supervisor can take over. If necessary, arrange another driver or transportation.
A supervisor's ordinary traffic ticket does not automatically place the learner on a GLP hold or reset the learner's waiting period.

What should a learner do if the supervisor is arrested and cannot drive the vehicle home?
Do not drive away alone. Arrange for another qualified supervisor, another legally licensed driver, towing, or other transportation as directed by police.
Not simply because the supervisor committed an offence. The learner can be ticketed for the learner's own violation, including continuing to drive without a qualified supervisor if the supervisor becomes ineligible.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
