If you hold a valid Class 7L but fail to have the required licence document with you while driving, police can issue an $81 ticket. That is different from driving while suspended, with an expired licence, or without a valid licence.
The normal fine for failing to produce a driver's licence is $81. A phone photo or screenshot does not replace the valid licence document you are required to carry.
| Situation | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Valid Class 7L, but licence document forgotten | This is a failure-to-produce/carry issue. The normal fine is $81. |
| Expired Class 7L | The licence is not currently valid. Follow the expiry/reapplication rules. |
| Suspended or prohibited | This is a more serious driving-status issue and is not treated as simply forgetting the document. |
| No valid driver's licence | This is not the same offence as holding a valid licence but failing to carry it. |
Police can verify licence status electronically, but that does not remove the requirement to have the valid licence document in your possession while driving.
Yes. A valid ICBC interim paper driver's licence can serve as the physical licence while you wait for the photo card. Carry the actual interim document, not only a phone image.
Can your supervisor carry your Class 7L licence for you while you drive?
No. The learner driver should have the valid licence in their own possession while driving. The supervisor's presence does not replace that requirement.
Give the officer accurate identifying information and follow their instructions. If your Class 7L is valid, the issue is the missing document rather than automatically being treated as an unlicensed driver.
The $81 document-carrying offence is separate from point-bearing moving violations. Check the ticket description if more than one offence was issued during the stop.
Does forgetting your Class 7L affect your GLP waiting period or N-test eligibility?
Forgetting the physical licence does not by itself reset the GLP waiting period. A separate prohibition or other licensing action would be a different issue.
There is no automatic 14-day, $25 "show your licence later" dismissal process in BC. A provincial violation ticket normally gives you 30 days to pay it or dispute it using the instructions on the ticket.
| Choice | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Pay | Pay the $81 ticket through the normal provincial ticket-payment process. |
| Dispute | File the dispute within the normal 30-day period and follow the instructions provided for the dispute process. |
If you dispute the ticket, evidence that your Class 7L was valid on the date of the stop may be relevant. Follow the dispute process rather than assuming an ICBC office can automatically cancel the ticket for a small fee.
Road-test document requirements are covered in the Road Test & License guides. Check that list before test day rather than relying on the traffic-stop rules in this article.
