To pass the ICBC knowledge test for a Class 7L learner's licence in British Columbia, you must answer 40 out of 50 questions correctly. This is a passing score of 80%.
The permit test passing score is 40 correct answers. The margin for error is 10 questions. If you get 11 questions wrong, the test stops automatically because you cannot reach the 80% threshold.
The Class 7L learner's licence minimum score is the same for all applicants taking the Class 7L knowledge test. The permit exam passing percentage does not change by age or test reason.
| Applicant Type | Total Questions | Passing Score (Correct) | Max Errors Allowed | Passing Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teens (16–18, Class 7L) | 50 | 40 | 10 | 80% |
| Adults (19+, new drivers) | 50 | 40 | 10 | 80% |
| Re-exam / licence reinstatement | 50 | 40 | 10 | 80% |
If you score 39 out of 50, you fail. The system shows your result immediately. The current knowledge-test retest wait is one day. Use the score feedback to review weak categories before the next attempt.
Is the passing score the same for the online and in-person BC knowledge test? Yes. The passenger-vehicle knowledge test uses the same 40-out-of-50 passing standard whether you take it online or in person.
Is the passing score different when you retake the ICBC knowledge test? No. A retake uses the same passing standard: 40 correct answers out of 50.
No special licensing advantage is published for scoring above the pass mark. Once you meet the required score and complete the remaining licensing steps, a higher score does not create a faster licensing path.
If you fail the Class 7 knowledge test, the current retest wait is one day. The $15 test fee applies again. For the full failed-test and retake process, use the dedicated Failed & Retakes guide.
Eligibility, ID and consent requirements are covered in the dedicated application and required-document pages. For applicants under 19, the current parent/guardian consent form is MV2606A.
If you pass: Continue the remaining licensing steps. Class 7L driving restrictions are covered in the dedicated Driving Restrictions guide.
If you fail: Review the categories you missed and wait one day before another knowledge-test attempt.
Tip: Aim comfortably above 80% on practice tests so a few difficult questions do not put you below the 40-of-50 passing score.
