A Class 7 learner's licence is a restricted, foundational licence issued by a registry agent solely for the purpose of practicing driving under supervision.
It is the first stage in Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.
This document is officially a Class 7 Learner's Licence. It allows you to drive a Class 5 vehicle (most cars, light trucks, and SUVs), only while supervised. You can also operate a moped alone, but under the same night-driving and zero-alcohol restrictions.
Driving without a supervisor results in a ticket, demerit points, and a possible vehicle tow.
Is Alberta Class 7 the same thing as a learner's permit? Yes in everyday use. Alberta's official name is the Class 7 learner's licence; people often call it a learner's permit.
A Class 7 lets you operate a moped by yourself and drive Class 5 vehicles under the required supervision. It also allows supervised learning on Class 6 vehicles, subject to the motorcycle age and supervision rules. See Alberta's Class 7 vehicle rules.
Class 7 is Stage 1 of Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing system. Class 5-GDL is Stage 2. You remain a Class 7 learner until you meet the learner-stage requirements and pass the Class 5 road test.
Many new drivers confuse the rules of a learner's permit with those of a full licence.
| Feature | Class 7 Learner's Licence | Class 5-GDL Driver's Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Supervision | Mandatory. A fully licensed (non-GDL) adult must be in the front seat. | Not required. You can drive alone. |

Class 7 is the learner stage of Alberta’s GDL system. After meeting the Class 7 holding requirement, drivers can move toward Class 5-GDL. See the road test and licence guide for the full progression.
A Class 7 learner's licence and a provisional licence are different stages in Alberta.
The provisional licence is the Class 5-GDL licence.
| Feature | Class 7 Learner's Licence | Class 5-GDL (Provisional) Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Function | Supervised practice only. | Independent transport (solo driving). |
| Minimum Age | 14 years old. | 16 years old. |
| Supervision Rule | Supervising driver required at all times. | No supervising driver required. |
| Curfew | No driving from midnight to 5:00 a.m. | No curfew. |
Class 7 remains a supervised learner licence with zero-tolerance and other GDL restrictions. See the Alberta permit driving rules for the detailed restrictions.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
