You must provide one original document proving your identity and legal presence in Canada.
Identity and legal-entitlement documents must meet the registry’s original-document requirements. Alberta residence documents may be presented on paper or electronically.
| Document | Key Details |
|---|---|
| Canadian Birth Certificate | Original provincial/territorial certificate. A decorative hospital certificate is not valid. |
| Valid Canadian Passport | Must not be expired. Covers both identity and citizenship. |
| Permanent Resident Card | Must be current and valid. |
| Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) Card | Federally recognized for Indigenous applicants. |
| Canadian Citizenship Certificate/Card | Confirms legal status as a Canadian citizen. |
| Valid Foreign Passport + IRCC Document | For temporary residents. Must present both the passport and a valid work/study permit or visitor record. |
You do not always need a birth certificate.
If your current legal name differs from your birth certificate due to marriage, adoption, or legal name change, bring a government-issued linking document.
At the Red Deer registry, ENMAX electricity bill was addressed to a parent onlyapplicant's name not listed.
Alberta has no grace period on expired ID — check your expiry date before any registry visit: One Lethbridge applicant had an ID that expired during a family trip. The registry clerk declined the application. They renewed the card and returned the following week.
A Calgary applicant was turned away at the Crowfoot Registry because her married name on her application didn't match her birth certificate.
She returned the next day with her marriage certificate to complete the process.
You need at least one acceptable document showing your full name and current Alberta address. It may be presented on paper or electronically and should generally be dated within the previous 90 days.
If living with an aunt, uncle, or other relative, you can use their address. You must provide: A letter from the relative stating you reside at that address, signed by them. One of the relative's proof of residency documents (like a utility bill) for that address. Your own proof of relationship, such as a birth certificate listing a common parent, or a statutory declaration. Minors under 18 can use the 'parent trace' method: a parent/guardian provides their Alberta driver's licence or a residential document, along with the minor's birth certificate to prove relationship and shared address.
For Alberta permit process details, see the Alberta permit guide.
Visit the Alberta learner's permit guide for step-by-step rules.
Parental Consent for Applicants Under 18: A first-time applicant under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who must show proof of guardianship and sign consent at the registry. Consent is not required if the minor can prove they are married or self-supporting.
Under Alberta's Traffic Safety Act, one parent's signature is typically sufficient, even if parents are divorced.
The signing parent must provide valid photo ID.
A 16-year-old in Lethbridge arrived at the registry on 50 Street alone with all other documents.
Identity and legal-entitlement documents generally need to be valid originals. Alberta treats residence documents differently: acceptable residence proof, such as a utility bill or bank statement, may be shown on paper or electronically. See the Alberta ID requirements.
For a first-time applicant under 18, the parent or legal guardian should be ready to prove guardianship and identify themselves at the registry before signing consent. The minor still needs the normal identity, Alberta-residency, and legal-entitlement documents.
Accepted examples include a utility bill, bank or credit-card statement, residential lease, mortgage document, land title, or signed confirmation of Alberta employment. The document should show your full name and Alberta address and generally be dated within the previous 90 days.
Do all Class 7 application documents need to show exactly the same name? Your legal name must be supported across the documents. If your name changed because of marriage, divorce, or a legal name change, tell the registry agent and bring proof linking the names.
Bring these items for your permit application paperwork.
These errors are common causes of delays: using a residence document that does not show your full name and current Alberta address, bringing an outdated document, or presenting an expired legal-status document.
After the document check, you will complete the required testing and pay the applicable fees. See the permit test guide for test details and the fees and costs guide for current charges.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
