An Alberta Class 7 learner's licence is issued for a term of up to 5 years.
The expiry date is printed on your licence card. There is no grace period for driving once it expires. Under 75 years old: Licence terms are typically 1 to 5 years. 75 and over: Licence terms are 1 to 2 years, subject to medical reviews. Mandatory Holding Period: The 12-month clock for GDL progression runs only when your licence is valid. If your driving privileges are suspended, the Class 7 learner period is extended, which can delay eligibility to progress to Class 5-GDL.
One Lethbridge applicant had let their provincial ID card expire during a two-month trip. They had not checked the expiry date before going. The registry clerk flagged it at the document check. They renewed the ID before reboooking.
Driving with an expired learner's permit is illegal.
| Expiry Duration | Process & Requirements |
|---|---|
| Less than 6 months | Simple renewal at a registry agent. No testing required. |
| 6 months to 3 years | Visit a registry with identification and proof of Alberta residency. No knowledge test required. |
| More than 3 years | You must restart as a new applicant. This requires passing the vision screening and Class 7 knowledge test again. |
Penalty: Driving on an expired licence can result in a $230+ fine, a towed vehicle, and a mark on your driving record.
See the Alberta learner's permit guide for complete requirements.

Documents for In-Person Renewal: Your current (or expired) licence.
Renewing the card does not mean you are starting the learner stage from day one again. The Class 5-GDL rule is based on the required Class 7 holding period. If your licence has been expired for a long time, separate expired-licence rules can apply, including retesting after more than 3 years. See Alberta renewal rules.
Can you renew your Alberta Class 7 at any registry agent? In-person driver-licence renewals are handled by Alberta registry agents. You do not have to return to the office that originally issued the card.
Parental or guardian consent is an Alberta Class 7 eligibility rule for drivers under 18. Renewal instructions do not create an adult exception for a learner who is still a minor, so confirm the consent requirement with the registry before the visit if the driver will still be under 18 on the renewal date.
What if your Class 7 expires while you are temporarily outside Alberta? Alberta allows eligible drivers who are temporarily outside the province to apply remotely using the Remote Driver's Licence/ID Card Application (REG11197). The application and fees can be sent to an Alberta registry agent.
| Scenario | Action | Estimated Cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal before or within 3 years of expiry | Standard renewal process | Up to $98.65 |
| Licence expired for more than 3 years | Re-application (retake knowledge test, new vision screen) | $117+ |
A learner in Calgary booked their Class 5 road test for March 15th.
A driver in Edmonton let their Class 7 expire for 8 months.
A learner who moved abroad let their Alberta Class 7 licence lapse for 4 years.
Upon returning to Red Deer, they were required to retake the Class 7 knowledge test and vision screening as a new applicant, losing all previous GDL progress.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
