Turning 18 in Alberta does not cancel your Class 7 learner's licence.
| What changes at 18 | What stays the same |
|---|---|
| Parental or guardian consent is no longer an under-18 requirement. | Your valid Class 7 licence does not end on your 18th birthday. |
| You handle licensing transactions as an adult applicant. | You still need the required Class 7 holding period and supervised driving until you qualify for Class 5-GDL. |
| Stage | Requirement | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Class 7 (Learner) | Pass knowledge test, vision screening | 12-month minimum hold |
| Class 5-GDL (Probationary) | Pass Class 5 basic road test | 24-month probationary period |
| Full Class 5 | Final 12 months suspension-free | Automatic upgrade at registry |
When you become an adult, Alberta's licensing rules treat you differently than a teen. The changes affect supervision, practice hours, and waiting periods.
Yes. Alberta requires parental or guardian consent only for drivers under 18. Once you are 18, that consent requirement no longer applies to your Class 7 licensing transactions.
Yes. Turning 18 does not restart the Class 7 learner stage. You still work toward the same minimum Class 7 holding period before the Class 5-GDL road test.
Do you need a new Class 7 card when you turn 18? No. Your existing Class 7 remains valid until the expiry date printed on the card unless another licensing action changes its status.
The under-18 consent rule ends, but the Class 7 driving restrictions remain. You still need the required supervising driver, cannot drive from midnight to 5:00 a.m., must maintain zero alcohol while driving, and remain subject to the Class 7 demerit limit. See Alberta's Class 7 restrictions.
Turning 18 does not replace the normal Class 7-to-Class 5-GDL progression. Once you meet the Class 7 holding requirement, follow the Alberta road test and licence guide for booking and road-test details.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
