Your Alberta Class 7 supervising driver must be at least 18 years old and hold a full Class 5 driver's licence or higher.

• This is a core rule of Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.
• ? The supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat.

Who can supervise an Alberta Class 7 learner and what disqualifies them?

Qualified Class 7 Supervising Drivers

For a Class 5 vehicle, the supervising driver must be at least 18, hold a valid full Class 5 licence or higher, and sit in the front passenger seat. The person's relationship to the learner does not matter.

Can a Class 5-GDL driver supervise an Alberta Class 7 learner?

No. A Class 5-GDL licence is probationary. Alberta requires the supervising driver to hold a full, non-GDL Class 5 licence or higher.

Supervision by Siblings, Friends, and Other Qualified Adults

Yes. A parent or guardian is not required for practice driving. A sibling, friend, or other adult can supervise if they are at least 18 and hold the required valid full licence.

Can someone with an expired or suspended licence supervise a Class 7 learner?

No. The supervising driver's licence must be current and valid for the vehicle being driven. If the supervisor is no longer qualified, the Class 7 learner should not continue driving until another qualified supervisor is in the required seat.

Class 7 Supervisor Responsibilities and Legal Limits

The supervisor must remain qualified throughout the drive and sit in the front passenger seat. They should be sober, alert, and able to supervise the learner. Passenger phone use is not automatically a distracted-driving offence, but the supervisor should not let a device interfere with effective supervision.

Does the Class 7 supervisor need to carry their driver's licence?

Yes. The supervising driver should have their current valid driver's licence with them while supervising so they can show that they meet the licence requirement if asked.

Can a 21-year-old sibling supervise? Yes, if the sibling holds a valid full Class 5 licence or higher. A 21-year-old with only a Class 5-GDL licence cannot supervise.

Can a visiting adult from another Canadian province supervise? They must be at least 18 and hold a valid full licence that authorizes them to drive the vehicle. If there is any doubt about an out-of-province licence class, confirm before the learner drives.

Using an unqualified supervisor violates the Class 7 supervision condition. Do not assume it creates a fixed six-month road-test delay; any licensing delay depends on the actual offence, demerits, and whether a suspension occurs.

Can the Class 7 supervisor sit in the back seat?

No. For ordinary Class 7 supervision in a car, the qualified supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat.

Common Class 7 Supervisor Mistakes

• Using a Class 5-GDL supervisor: A probationary Class 5-GDL driver cannot supervise a Class 7 learner.
• Using an expired or suspended licence: Check that the supervisor's licence is current and valid before the drive starts.
• Sitting in the wrong seat: The qualified supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat.
• Not having the supervisor's licence available: The supervising driver should carry their current licence while supervising.
• Continuing after the supervisor becomes unqualified: Stop driving until another qualified supervisor can take the front passenger seat.
