Interpreter and Audio Assistance Options
- American Sign Language (ASL) is not an automated test option.
- Special accommodations for interpreters require pre-approval from Alberta Transportation or a registry agent.
- Audio assistance is available.
- ✓ You can request an audio-assisted test where questions are read aloud in English through headphones.
- A $13 fee for audio headphones at some registries at select registries.
- You cannot use a personal interpreter or translator during the test.
- Electronic devices, phone-based translation tools, and personal notes are prohibited and will result in failure and a possible 30-day retest suspension.
Translation Quality and Driving Requirements
Translation quality is standardized by the province. However, comprehension of driving terms is critical. Studying the official Alberta Driver's Guide is essential, regardless of test language.
- All road signs, traffic laws, and enforcement in Alberta are in English. ✓ Passing a multilingual permit test does not change the language requirement for driving. ✗ You must understand English road signs like 'Yield' or 'Do Not Enter' to drive safely.
- For example, a driver who passed the test in Urdu must still recognize English signage on Deerfoot Trail in Calgary or the Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton.
